Much as I've derided SVG as a GM, and though he seems to have lost the team this year, I do wonder what the value of getting a new coach really is. The team is capped out for the forseeable future. The only kinds of coaches who would be interested in taking on the team are super-inexperienced guys who are just trying to break into the head coach carousel OR retreads that have failed over and over and just want a paycheck. Neither of those kinds of coaches are likely to be better than SVG. Even if we think the team has mailed it in, SVG can coach. You might not know it from our records, but the team has made real strides (the real problem is that we were worse than our record in the past but Joe was too dumb to tank).
Not making the playoffs this year sucks, but replacing the coach doesn't really make a difference. With an offseason of practice and gameplanning, SVG probably can get more out of the Blake-Drummond frontcourt than we've seen so far. I'm not sure a retread or crappy assistant could do the same. Given we are almost sure to lose our pick this year, that makes next year a better shot to make a change anyway. If we fail next year, at least the new coach can come in thinking that have two foundational pieces and a lottery pick. That might improve the candidates we can persuade to come in.
