DPS Sick out

The Detroit public schools are due to run out of money to pay teachers on June 30th. The teachers planned a "sick out" today to protest, even though there are 2 months to figure out how to get the money to pay them.

Here is a good quote.

"There's a basic agreement in America: When you put in a day's work, you'll receive a day's pay. DPS (Detroit Public Schools) is breaking that deal," Bailey said. "Teachers want to be in the classroom giving children a chance to learn and reach their potential. Unfortunately, by refusing to guarantee that we will be paid for our work, DPS is effectively locking our members out of the classrooms."

Sure doesn't feel like a lock out.

I've seen the classrooms provided by DPS with my own eyes. These 'sick outs' have been a way of protesting for months. This is not simply because they 'might not get paid'.

to me, the disparity in education spending and quality is absolutely inexcusable. it's a deep indictment of our society.

and it's NOT by accident, nor is it a case of the residents of Detroit reaping what they sow.

the people that declare racism is no longer an issue are either ignorant of this (which is really no excuse), or... well... you know.

how about some data to back up these claims? oh nevermind, I'll look for it myself. Here's what I found...

Average State funding per student in Michigan public schools $9.6k, Detroit $13.8k - almost 1.5x the average for the state of Michigan. The Detroit City school District ranks 43 out of 836 districts in dollars spent per student - just outside the top 5%. Seems pretty clear which person in this argument is ignorant - but why let facts get in the way of your race baiting? If you think the disparity in quality of education is a product of racism, then you're just a moron. It's a product of inept administrations, breakdown of families in those communities, and corrupt, lazy union schlubbs and public officials.

Youve been out debating people on here for years its seems. Its almost like watching a game of "whack a mole".

link? context? no???? you intentionally ignore those?

you also fail to include the banks and PR stooges who are involved in the mismanagement of public school funds in Detroit. they are directly profiting from it, with no legal accountability. the same shit would not fly if they tried it with Grosse Pointe or Bloomfield Hills public schools.

here's an interesting tidbit you missed: the Detroit public schools are saddled with debt for this reason. a chunk of that money doesn't even go to teachers or students, but to service the immense loan payments bankers foisted on DPS. in fact the Detroit chapter of the NAACP just gave an award to Republican state senator for his work trying to get the DPS out of these ruinous finance deals. also note: they are not seeking to replace the DPS with more charter schools, since they now saw how that completely ruined the schools of muskegon heights (another majority black district in Michigan, so who cares, right?)

Again, having seen much of it first hand, I agree with this.

*edit* I should add though that only looking at state funding for how a school district is financed is a pretty lazy way of deciding if a district is well funded or not.

Over the last 15 years, the portion of total school revenues from the state sales tax and the state-run lottery has steadily decreased. In 1995, they contributed 32 percent and 5 percent, respectively. In 2015, they’re expected to make up just 21 percent and 3.5 percent of all school funds.

his "debating" is finding a link from some Right Wing think tank paid to publish articles pushing causes he agrees with (anti-unions, climate change denial, Obama is a dangerous muslim, etc), then cutting and pasting a link here, along with a bunch on insults labeling anyone who disagrees with him an idiot, a scumbag, dumb, stupid, gay, etc etc

there are a lot more factors that go into this. you can't just look at the situation in Detroit now and blame the people who live there.

and the breakdown of families doesn't happen in a generation either; this is the product of years of policies intended to benefit white citizens while ignoring (at best) or actively plundering the tax bases of majority black areas.

read about the process of redlining. the government only underwrote home loans for whites! this played a huge role in the disparity of wealth between blacks and whites post-WWII.

to be fair, I know I'm throwing out the R word a lot here, but I don't see any other way to look at a policy like this. it's racist. the motivation of those pushing it doesn't matter; they are favoring one group over another on the basis of their skin color. and if not every politician or official who has developed or furthered policies that benefit whites at the expense of blacks is racist, they're at least aware that their political career would be short lived if they treated all voters equally, and so go along with the status quo.

While there are certainly other factors, including race, the DPS are/have been run by the dirtiest, slimiest group of people I've seen in public service. It's disturbing what some of them have gotten away with. I can only hope (but don't expect) that they clean it up eventually. Detroit will never prosper again with an education system that shitty. No amount of arenas, casinos, and theaters will change that.

I'm not trying to say they're blameless, or that personal accountability doesn't matter, but that the people who fund their political campaigns need to be included in the list as well. maybe even in bold print, since money talks.

Show me a link that disproves the numbers. You have access to the internet, yet you didn't provide a link to any data to support your presumption that there was a massive, racist spending disparity (because it doesn't exist). I went online, and the first two sites I looked at. Since you're too lazy to do it yourself, here you go...

http://www.michigancapitolconfidential.com/20546 - this could be a right wing website but I don't know. What I do know, before you jump up and down about some right wing agenda, note the numbers they quote come from Michigan Department of Education.'

http://www.mlive.com/news/kalamazoo/index.ssf/2015/09/look_up_per-pupil_spending_det.html - this is MLIVE, so not a right wing website. You will have to do a little work yourself to find the data by district, but even you can see that Detroit spending per pupil is way higher than the state average.

As for the banks and PR firms - change the subject much? Whose fault is it, banks and PR firms or conservative white racists? Who decided to hire those banks and PR firms to manage these programs? Do you think Republicans, who you mistakenly think are the party of racists (the record is quite clear on this) had ANYTHING to do with hiring these banks or PR firms to mismanage the finances of Detroit Public Schools? Republicans haven't had a say on any DPS matters for at least 50 years. Face it, it's your team that has failed DPS schools and more money isn't the answer to fix the mess you've put them in.

I'm not arguing that they are well funded, or funded well enough. I don't have the expertise to say how much is enough. BUT, I do think the information I posted is more than enough evidence to prove that there isn't some racist conspiracy to keep the people of Detroit poor and uneducated. It's just more counterproductive race baiting bullshit by dumbasses like michturd.

Ha! That is your playbook to a "T". I have never once called anyone on here "gay" but I've seen you hurl that epithet around many times. Remember, the record is clear - you're the only racist, homophobe, anti-religious bigot on the board. And the only people I've called "idiots" on here are guys like you and bob (i.e. people who are actually idiots) and even then, only after they have insulted me.

Edit: I've never said Obama was a muslim, just that he has been a horrible President, possibly the worst of all time.

LOL, do you ever throw out any other word (I mean when you're not calling people fags)? And we know you don't see any other way to look at this or any other policy - literally everything is about race with you. You come on here promoting farcical ideas and stupid policies like white privilege and affirmative action - ideas and policies that clearly favor one group at the expense of another, the very definition of racism and discrimination - and then you accuse anyone who disagrees with your wrongheaded racist ideas of being racist.

So you think despite an announcement stating they have no intention to pay the teachers over the summer, they should continue to work? No school system operates that way. A teachers pay is always spread over the year, even the summer.

They have about 2 months to figure something out...which they will. Do your job. Not showing up for work isn't going to help the city "find the money"

You have much more faith in the DPS system than I do.

How come they couldn't figure out something the previous 10 months of the year? Are they that short sighted they can't project for a full year?
