durrrr iss cold outside! so much fer global WARMING!

my hedge is being by a large body of freshwater. although, I get what you're saying... climate change could result in a very warm earth or a snowball earth, in which case my large body of freshwater will be a frozen lump of ice, and my descendents will not be able to comfortably stay put and merely fight off interlopers... but instead will have to migrate and be those interlopers.

although I suppose that means the ultimate hedge is superior weaponry. I will also be sure to stockpile guns and ammunition.

have you heard of this book? I just read it. I mentioned it in one of the book threads where people were talking about one of those zombie-apocalypse kinda books, and I was like, here guys, here's an actual non-fantastical study of what happens in a societal collapse.

short summary:
- losers: Vikings on Greenland, Anasazi, Maya, Easter Island natives, some other isolated Polynesians
- winners: Vikings on Iceland, Japanese shogunate, central New Guinea farming communities, Tikopians

- jury is still out: everyone else currently on planet Earth

Haven't read it, but it looks awesome. So tell me, will my knowledge of beer brewing get me through a collapse?

it depends on: 1.) whether the people around you are beer drinkers & willing to trade; and 2.) whether you still have access to beer-making supplies.

he didn't dwell too much on how individuals fared after collapse though; he focused on how to avoid the collapse. I think he would tell you that upon collapse, chaos rules. no sane person should be willing to risk taking their chances after a collapse, and instead should make every effort to preserve society.

We're hosed because we have city water. We're not far from people with wells, so it's a matter of negotiating with them. Probably hopeless.

After that mostly I need grain. Then I'll start making crappy beer. I could culture yeast, but without a refrigerator the characteristics are going to change...and then I know how to malt grain, in theory. I've never done it. Hops are hopeless. I'm going to need to use other things to flavor it and it probably won't have as much of a shelf life.

Now if people are getting sick from the water and I can sanitize it by making 0.5% beer...I'll be in business.

But I'm banking on no collapse.

My favorite explanation by a "denier" was to say that it's just Al Gore out to make a profit.

Thats quite a scam.
