basically we have 2 choices next year. Sign him long term to reduce his salary. Or pay him 21.4 mil then let him walk cause franchise tag in 2015 would be 25.7 mil lmao. Even when we select a good player we get screwed. Cant cut him next year....itd be an 18 mil hit.

Lions set up '14 verdict on Ndamukong Suh
March, 15, 2013 Mar 1512:00PM ETBy Kevin Seifert | ESPN.com Recommend9 Tweet17 Comments1KEmail Print I try not to saturate you with contract details at this or any other time of year, figuring most of you don't care how much a player makes unless it impacts his future and/or the makeup of the team. This week's contract renegotiation between the Detroit Lions and defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh is one such example.

SuhThe bottom line, before we get to the specifics: The Lions likely will find themselves at a crossroads with Suh next year at this time.

As best as I can tell, they will have two choices. They could be at the long-term negotiating table, as they are now with quarterback Matthew Stafford and were last year with receiver Calvin Johnson, to lower an astronomical 2014 salary cap number. Or they could be preparing for Suh's final season with the team.

Here are the details: This week, the Lions reduced Suh's 2013 salary-cap figure from $18.2 million to $10.942 million. They did it by converting most of his base salary to a signing bonus and then pro-rating it over the 2013, '14 and '15 seasons. His 2013 compensation won't change measurably, but the maneuver created about $7.5 million in 2013 cap space for the team.

As we all know, such moves provide only temporary relief. Suh is now projected to carry a $21.412 million cap figure for 2014. That's higher than the number the Lions are currently trying to reduce for Stafford ($20.8 million) through a long-term deal.

Suh's contract technically runs through the 2015 season, but that year is voidable -- meaning he almost certainly would be eligible for free agency after the 2014 season. If the Lions want him to keep him long-term, next offseason is the time to make that happen.

Otherwise, if Suh plays out the 2014 season under his current contract, the NFL's franchise tag rules would dramatically limit the Lions' ability to retain him for 2015 and beyond. NFL rules would assign Suh a franchise tag figure of $25.7 million, far too high for any player and especially a defensive tackle. It would render the tag useless for the Lions and allow Suh to hit the free agent market, much like Buffalo Bills defensive end Mario Williams did last winter.

If the Lions decide they don't want Suh long-term, they probably would have to live with his $21.412 million cap number in 2014. Releasing him before the season would still cost the Lions about $18 million against the 2014 cap, a minimal $3 million savings.

Much could change between now and then, but assuming the Lions still consider Suh a fundamental building block in the winter of 2014, he likely will be rewarded handsomely then as a matter of necessity.

What they need to is not restructure but redo his contract and give him a pay cut..He makes way too much and we're gonna get screwed sooner or later..

Suh and his agent would laugh in their faces...they negotiated in good faith and helped the Lions lower that number the last few years so they could fit other contracts under the cap...They OWE him that money now....said it before you keep restucturing these guys and sooner or later you have to pay them....its now 2014...where he is gonna carry a 21 million dollar cap for a DT :lmao: absolutley assinine.

ya its the last year of his deal...he cant really restructure :D youre asking a guy to take about 10 mil a year less than what hes making now or hes going to walk. And like slick said....the guy has already restructured in order to help the team with cap relief so he will be going into negitiations figuring we owe him something. Funny how alot of our guys feel that way but end up not getting it....seems to be a trend.

not gonna happen...they're going to have to swallow the hit next year.

for sure the hit next year...nothing else they can do. i meant when they give him a new deal.....ud think his number would be right around 12 mil a year.

what i dont understand is they prorated the savings this year into a signing bonus in 13, 14 and 15 but the guy might not even be here in 15.

I get that its his and nothing we can do but man his hit number is gonna sky rocket.

Bigger picture is calvin is the only one that deserves or production even comes close to what he is paid. Staff just isnt a top 5 guy....he might turn into one....but hes not right now and getting paid like one. Suh should never sniff anywhere close to 20 mil a year let alone 25 lol

would love to see Warren Sapps reaction to Suh hitting the 21 million per season mark....he always shits on anything Suh , like Suh stole his lunch money and fucked his mother.

He would be sending him Florida real estate brochures.

The Lions are in the worst position of any team. They have three players (CJ, Staf & Suh) that all got huge rookie deals right before the new CBA. The Lions have no leverage with any of them. They should cut ties with Suh. Trade him while they can.

I'm starting to think those things actually happened the way Sapp talks about him.

year__Base___ SB__ Misc.___CAP hit
2013 630,000 ----0-- 9,862,500 10,492,500
2014 11,550,000 -0- 9,862,500 21,412,500
2015 3,505,000 --0-- 9,737,500 13,242,500

He only has 15 mil left on his contract but 34.6 mil of a cap hit, of that cap hit 19.6 is bonus money. If he signs a new contract whatever bonus money that hasn't hit will get allocated over the life of the new contract. If he signs a new deal after 2014, the 2015 bonus of 9.7 gets added to the new contract adding a cap hit of about 2 xta mil per for a 5 +yr deal.

It really depends on other contracts, Stafford mainly, but if they leave it alone we take an asinine hit in 2014 and pick up the option for 2015 where we have him at only 13 mil. If we need cap room in 2014 we can still pick up the option and restructure down to about 17 mil per for 14&15.

The one bright side is we're almost done with contracts from the old rookie pay scale. I believe Suh/Stafford is the end. Then the Lions won't be punished as much for getting high 1st round picks!!

not really. Every time they extend those guys they are paying them based on those original contracts.

Suh should have never gotten that deal in the first place and we got shit on right before they changed the rookie cap.

we should get a 2nd round comp pick every year until all 3 of those guys are gone....its only fair.

I just read more on Suh's restructuring, makes more sense to me now how it screws the Lions in the future. I hope they don't do the same thing with Stafford.

That situation falls on Millen. We will still be paying for his existance for a couple more years.

Fuck I hate that guy!
