was on display in Las Vegas last week, Shelden Adelson had all potential republican candidates to the Venetian so they could all kiss his ass to get his support. adelson gave over 100m to GOP candidates last year, Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, Scott Walker, and others were there to celebrate the SCOTUS ruling.

one funny thing is that Christie referred to the west bank as an occupied territory and got a quick scolding from everyone there, Adelson is the prototypical neocon and prefers "disputed territory"

oligarchy at its finest

That recent Supreme Court opinion that lifted restrictions on direct individual contributions to candidates was god-awful.

I read a portion of Roberts' opinion for the majority where he compared money directly to speech and said something like "we may not like what the KKK says, but we have to allow them to contribute." I thought that had to be some of the worst, most shameless, scum-sucking low legal reasoning in a majority opinion in a while. I found myself despising Roberts.

thing is... he doesn't come off as an idiot who would actually believe this nonsense (unlike say, Clarence Thomas or Antonin Scalia), so I feel he's gotta have trouble looking himself in the mirror in the morning after writing that. it's beyond ambulance chasing, hiding evidence, or showing up a funeral of someone you don't know, claiming to be old college buddies and handing out business cards.

1. Please recognize that the Dems (will) do the same. It is called "politics" by those in control, though those not in control consider it to be bullshit. Stop acting like only Cons act in this manner. The bashing from the Left is unbelievable considering there is currently a Dem POTUS.

2. The West Bank IS an occupied territory. There are many people occupying it, including Jews, Muslims, Christians, and others, even Atheists. As for it being a Disputed Territory, that has been going on for millennia and the belief that Americans are somehow going to resolve it is beyond stupid. However, that doesn't mean attempts should not be made to bring peace to the region. Still, if your opinion is that only the Jews or only the Muslims or only some other specific group is responsible for the problems there and that removing said particular group will solve the problem, then you are beyond hope.

So freaking ridiculous how the far left and far right are behaving these days, specifically on this board. So much hyper-hubris amongst both sides it is downright stupidity being trolled around on here these days.

...

good point. the money funding candidates and causes is 50/50 between the left and right... letting money flow into politics unabated benefits no particular party or political ideology.

Did I ever say this was a GOP only issue? i mentioned the venetian ass kiss convention because it was relevant as of this week.

if you want to take it down that road though, look at the vote. it was straight down party lines, all 5 who voted to uphold this "free speech" were appointed by republicans, the 4 dissenters were democrat appointees

Roberts did say that allowing unlimited money does not mean that the donor will gain influence or a quid pro quo situation from it and that in fact it doesn?t even suggest the appearance of corruption or quid pro quo

either he's lying or too stupid to hold the position of chief justice

It's not easy to try to have an economic system based on inequality and competition and a political system based on equality and democracy. We should always work towards strong regulation creating a firewall between money and political power if we believe in capitalism and democracy side-by-side. Here, the right to free speech is being used to breach that firewall.

Adelson seems to me to be more evident/involved in the selection of the Republican candidate than he seems to be in the general election.

He contributed a boat load of money to Gingrich in the Republican primaries, as I recall, before contributing to Romney in the general election.

Didn't seem to end up getting his money's worth in either case, seems to me.

the koch brothers are poster boys for this as well. the media trumpets this a little bit but the democrats look out for the top .01% as well.

again, the court voted along party lines on this one, which is telling

yeah, these clowns blew a lot of money on the last election cycle. hard to say what effect it had. the GOP did hold on to the house, and if it wasn't for the moronic senate candidates they nominated in a few states (why start blaming women for rape and all that during the campaign???) would've had the senate too.

true..just look at obama's ambassadors

There is one party and we ain't invited to it. Anyone who takes one side over the other is a stooge of all the party-ing members. They (you) are perpetuating the situation. "How do you take you oppression, sir...with or without force?"

Wake up and smell the stench of a rancid government.

Seems then we are all pretty much in agreement, the new law is BS and both parties are more and more subjected to corruption and caving to the big money backers while ordinary us are suffering more and more from political laringitis! I'm stoked we all agree on something!!!!!!!!

Is there a peaceful way to fix the problem?

NO. Do you agree?

Scary thing about this money in politics...if they're spending close to a billion dollars every election cycle, what is in it for them? More money? Power? This goes for both sides.

Obamas ambassadors ???

every POTUS has used Ambassadors as a reward for donors , not just Barry.

exactly. But, I do actually think he's abused it a bit. Honestly, I'd rather see there be a law in place that makes it impossible for financial donors to be given any kind of seat by an elected official - not just the ones they've given to.
