Detroit Tigers vs. Toronto Blue Jays, at Comerica Park, July 14, 2017 Matchups, Tickets, Preview.

Three things to know about this game:
Toronto's Joe Smith threw a side session on Sunday morning, taking the next step in in his recovery from right shoulder soreness that has sidelined him since June 14. He's expected to report to Triple-A Buffalo for a rehab assignment Sunday and, if all goes well, the righty could take the mound against the Red Sox on July 17.
Expect another large contingent of scouts to hit Detroit on Friday. Not all of them will be looking at Verlander, but teams like the Dodgers and Cubs have been following the team during his starts, and others will follow suit to watch some combination of Verlander, J.D. Martinez, Justin Wilson, Jose Iglesias and others.
Blue Jays slugger Josh Donaldson said the team will take a positive attitude going into the weekend series. "As cliche as it sounds, we really can only take it one day at a time," Donaldson said. "We have to fight for our lives each and every day. That's what it's about coming to the ballpark and coming to help our team win on a day-in-day-out basis."
The Tigers return from the all-star break eight games out of first place in the AL Central and 6.5 games out of the second wild card spot.
The Blue Jays have lost 7 of their past 11 and are five game out of the second wild card spot.
Toronto is 14th in the AL in runs scored (366).
Verlander is 3-4 with a 4.76 ERA in 11 career starts against the Blue Jays. His second career no-hitter game against them in 2011 at Rogers Centre.
Some notable Blue Jays against Verlander: Kendrys Morales .302 (13 for 43, 2 HRs), Jose Bautista .316 (6 for 19, 2 HRs), Justin Smoak .278 (5 for 18, 3 HRs).
Sanchez?s July 7 start was his first since May 19. He had been on the disabled list with a finger injury.
Sanchez is still searching for his first win this season after finishing 2016 with a 15-2 record and 3.00 ERA.
Sanchez has a 2.00 ERA in 18 career innings against Detroit.
Hot Hitter
Outfielder J.D. Martinez is 12 for 37 (.324) with one home run, three doubles and four RBIs in his last 10 games.
Cold Hitter
Catcher Alex Avila is 5 for 28 (.179) with one RBI and 13 strikeouts in his last nine games. He has walked eight times during that stretch, though.
