Gasoline

Car companies again, LA would have a much better subway system if the car manufacturers hadnt tanked it before it really got started.

Just like the big energy companies squash new energy tech startups today.

yup. we should be funding nuclear fusion and safer, more efficient nuclear fission power research big time, but big oil/coal doesnt want it to happen, so it doesnt (that, and all the irrational, uninformed fear about nuclear power tends to keep it down.)

Prices hitting two year lows ...despite improving economy. Will lower fuel costs be a catalyst for more growth?

Where is tsmith's face? I want to rub it in the Clarkston dirt.

Gas has been over $3 for almost 1100 days, considering it was well under $2 when Obama took office Im not sure the current price warrants any dirt to be rubbed..unless were grading on some curve??

If I was a cynical bastard, I might suggest that the GOP and it's allies (oil producers) drastically cut the cost of oil when it was pretty much assured the Dems would win the White House, so they could show how much it rose since he took office. A simple minded person might only think of the second part, guess which you are.

you make a good point.

I would say though that while price manipulation accounts for some % of the overall price, a lot of it is still supply and demand.

the dramatic drop in economic activity that hit after the real estate collapse (2007 - 2008) explains most of that. less industrial orders, less shipping, less use of gasoline = lower prices.

I'd like to see how that overlaps with a track of GNP.

I think you can see the way oil futures add to the price (which is where the price manipulation occurs) in the way that the price changed course almost overnight when Obama took office.

while presumably it took a while for the 2009 stimulus to kick in, prices rose in expectation of higher future demand almost immediately.

That was part of the point I was trying to illustrate, that prices stopped going down and started going up almost exactly to the day of Obama's inauguration.

Pretty coincidental that they took such a steep dive around the time Obama's campaign was pretty much a lock at beating the "Mavericks" too.

I got gas at $2.78 today so its getting closer to my dream of $1.50.
