I think there were a couple quotes - even from what was considered the "hard right" like Goldwater - from Republicans in the 60's that the fundies and real jesus freaks would poison their party.

then you read things like this...
This year?s speakers will include both Jewish House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), and a retired Colonel who once said that Christians should be working to get Jews to accept Jesus. In 2009, Boykin said that it ?really bothers? him when pastors say that ?the Jews don?t have to come to know Jesus, they?re under the old covenant. And that?s destroying the efforts of the Messianic Rabbis, and other Messianic Jews that are trying to lead their brothers and sisters to Christ.? Boykin is apparently referring to a little known tradition that observes elements of Judaism, but also believes in Jesus as a savior. Cantor didn?t return a request for comment.
this Boykin guy sounds like a world class knucklehead.
The immortal moment from last year?s Summit involved another inter-religious spat when Mitt Romney, speaking ahead of the American Family Association?s Bryan Fischer, said: ?We should remember that decency and civility are values too. One of the speakers who will follow me today, has crossed that line. Poisonous language does not advance our cause.? Fischer, who?s known for hating both grizzly bears and Muslims, and who had previously said that Mormons shouldn?t have First Amendment rights, essentially told Mitt to go to Hell: The next president, he said, ?needs to be a main of sincere, authentic, genuine Christian faith.? With Romney leading the ticket this year, TPM reports that Fischer will be attending the Summit this year but won?t have a speaking slot.
heh. as long as GOP candidates continue to try to "out-christian" eachother they'll never be relevant again. they need to find a leader with the balls to put these kooks in their place... Mitt's obviously not that guy, since then he's gone out of his way to placate them this year.

LOL, Mitt Romney-Hard Right, LOL...I guess compared to the "communist" in the WH...maybe so.

Last time I checked.....90%+ considered themselves christians..so the athesist on here are a select few

you gotta run right or left to get your party's Nomination and run right back to the Center to win the General....goes both ways.

it's not that.

you make it sound like they're all the same. a large chunk of those christians would be considered "lukewarm"... others are catholic, and will quickly feel isolated as soon as the Fred Phelps' and Pat Robertsons' out there start reminding them they consider the Pope the "anti-christ" or whatever has been said about that before.

there's a big difference these days between the lukewarm mass of methodists/presbyterians/catholics/lutherans/etc that make up the mass of that Christianity, and the fire and brimstone types. by catering to the latter, the GOP is finding itself out-of-touch with the former, even though they might otherwise prefer to vote against the black-looking guy... at least he has no problem with the fact that they rarely go to church, like to play cards, drink alcohol, watch "sinful" shows like "How I Met Your Mother" etc. etc.

the kooks may be easy to pander to, but they're never satisfied. they don't understand how to "compromise." the GOP seems to have forgotten that...

The difference between the christians has been pretty well established since the first days of Jerry Falwell. Catholics feel more threatened by Obama than any evangelicals.

um. I don't know if that's the case.

In my own family, there are the ones that would be "threatened" by any democrat, even if it was George W. Bush himself running as a democrat... they're not going anywhere. They'd vote for Hitler if the GOP nominated him.

then there are the ones that were voting for HW Bush, Dole, Bush Jr but really starting to get creeped out by the Creationism, violent anti-choice advocates, and the ignorance inherent in both of those positions, and grudgingly voted for Kerry, then Obama.

hence the title of this thread.

the women in my family - not the stay-at-home Ann Romney types but the ones with real careers - collectively vomited the first time they heard Sarah Palin speak, and they've pretty much been firmly democrats since then.

Where is your god now, GOP???

HAHAHAHAAHA...

I dont put my faith in the messenger but rather the message itself

Wow.

I thought it was Martin Luther and Henry VIII who kinda started that ball rolling...

you learn your history from books, he gets his from Fox News and Glenn Beck...

"The difference between the christians has been pretty well established since the first days of Jerry Falwell..."

That is just too funny.

The primary reason the American Colonies were established "the difference between the Christians..."

Freakin' Jerry Fallwell...

That sounds a lot like the University of Michigan offensive scheme for the last three seasons...Denard Robinson run left, Denard Robinson run right...Denard Robinson run up the middle...

Maybe that's why Obama likes to go to the University of Michigan so much, and hang with DRob...gives him clues for strategy...

too many Catholics dont even follow the religion...look at Pelosi, Caroline Kennedy, Joe Biden. If you believe in abortion you're a catholic in name only

I have never liked the use of "believe in" to mean something like "support", "accept", "tolerate", or "promote". Obviously, people that are very much against abortion also believe it exists.

Yeah.

After all what does Catholicism have to do with anything but Abortion?

The Church St. Peter founded on the teachings handed down from Jesus himself was irrelevant for 2000 years, until abortion came along, because the issue of abortion is the true cornerstone of Catholicism, and everyone knows this, right?

Oh, there's a few other things; there's the collection, and eating the blessed unleavened bread, and then there are the socials afterwards at the associated Catholic school auditorium, or the parish hall.
