Gregg Williams Will Never Coach Another NFL Game

Yahoo Sports' Michael Silver has obtained audio of Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams instructing his defenders to physically injure 49ers offensive players during the clubs' 2011 playoff game.
The audio was captured by filmmmaker Sean Pamphilon, who was doing a documentary on former Saints S Steve Gleason in his battle back from ALS. Gleason was on the sideline during the game. Williams speaks of dealing 49ers QB Alex Smith a "remember me" shot, reinjuring 49ers PR Kyle Williams, and hitting 49ers RB Frank Gore in the head during pileups. Williams wanted WR Michael Crabtree to suffer a debilitating injury. "We need to decide whether Crabtree wants to be a fake-ass prima donna or he wants to be a tough guy," Williams said. "We need to find that out, and he becomes human when you [expletive] take out that outside ACL."
 
Audible evidence of Williams ordering players to intentionally injure their opponents seems like it may cross the legal-line and also be a prosecutable offense, no?
 
Doubt it. If he published it maybe, but saying he heard him say that stuff shouldn't get him in trouble. I'm sure the guys at NFL films have better audio and film that Goodell can review.
 
I think guys talk a lot of trash for motivation. There's a definite difference between dirty or cheap hits and clean, nasty hits though.

I, obviously didn't play in the NFL, but it wasn't uncommon for coaches to tell the teams I was on to hit the opposing players so hard they remember it, or to try to hit them hard enough to knock them out of the game. That was motivation more than wishing injury on your opponent, so I wouldn't put a ton of stock into the words. The acts gotta accompany the words to give it any more severity, IMO.

Yeah but talking about taking out a guy's ACL is another thing altogether.

Oh, Pamphilon published it all right, but the ~12 minute audio on his website is down due to too many hits...lol. Here is part of the audio on youtube with only the pre-game speech by Williams with text, for some odd fucking reason I can't post the embed video here but here is the yt link:

I'm sure that many football fans think that what Williams said (and offered bounties as a reward) is commonplace in the NFL, maybe, maybe not, but he got caught doing it, even AFTER being warned to cease and desist by the NFL. Its one thing to motivate your team as a coach, but naming off specifics like Williams had is unforgivable, and if I was in a position to do so, I would definitely try to find out if he could be held criminally liable for his words.

But I'm not sure the audio hurts him in any way. Talking bad ass to his team? Not like money was thrown around. And I don't see a problem with "keep hitting him in the head or test his acl out etc". That seems normal.

That's kinda what I'm saying. I've had plenty of coaches tell me to sock somebody in the mouth, knock somebody outta the game, kill somebody, etc. I'm not sure the words used should be taken as literal as some are taking them. The ordering of cheap shots and talk of taking out an ACL is a bit over the top, but did it result in those injuries in the end?
 
NFL players are of course, traded, released, and become FAs, so although some may be "wonderlic" challenged, most must or SHOULD realize that it is always possible that they may someday be on the very same team of a player or players that they were previously instructed to attempt to cause injuries to, and may face their former coach and team in games, maybe even lining up on STs next to them. So it seems to me that a coach or coaches who do like Williams has, will inevitably be ratted on/outed for their words/actions.

The NFL wants this to go away. If 1-2 years from now, Greg Williams coaches again, they'll start playing that audio again like crazy, and this whole thing will be back in the news. Every game he coaches, people are gonna bring it up. The NFL won't be having any of that.

This speech was just ridiculous. I have lost a lot of respect for Williams with those whole scenario.
 
Williams could be held responsible, NfLPA is advising the players that were named to get a lawyer in case assault charges are filed (along with other obvious reasons). If the players need protection I'm sure the ring leader will also.

So if you were an NFL player that had been traded from a team that you knew whose coaches on O/D/STs had been renown to put bounties on players and made plans that specifically targeted some/many players who were known to have certain "vulnerabilities", and you knew that THEY knew exactly what/where yours were/are, how would you react when facing them in a game, and several players obviously were (unnecessarily/in the pile/after whistle) "ganging-up" and aiming right at you, and/or for example, your knee(s), back, head, or what/wherever your "weakness(es)" were?

Did any of those named suffer the injuries Williams called for, when he called for them? If not, they've got no case. If they did, they've still gotta prove it was a result of Williams's words/bounty and not a result of regular game play. Good luck with that too.

Would be tough to prove but I also don't have acess to all the info. NFLPA is just do what they are supposed to do and advise their guys best they can. I highly doubt anything comes of it other than fines/suspensions.

I wanna hear the pep talk williams gave about stafford, had to have been some gems in that speech.
 
No one got injured though in that game did they? So you charge him with conspiring to maybe hurt an opposing player. Then you have to decide if the injury was because of this shitty speach or just an accident. Good luck proving that...

Honestly man I did respect him before all of this came out. I wasnt talking about just the speech I was more talking the entire bounty system. He is one of the better DCs in the game and set up some amazing defenses.
