#GunAppreciationDay shootings helped people appreciate guns

There were only three shootings at gun shows over the weekend, as really dumb people celebrated "Gun Appreciation Day." The title of the day itself is stupid, as it implies guns are some sort of benevolent beings that will understand and appreciate the fact that people love them.

Ironically in the aftermath of one shooting (an accidental shotgun discharge that injured three attendees) the organizers of the event banned people from bringing their guns... so you couldn't even have your gun by your side while you appreciated all it did for you (like discharging and injuring three innocent people who did not intend to harm you).

this quote made me never want to attend a gun show:
A friend of mine is a combat veteran and a military instructor. He sent an email describing how a real expert views these events, and gave me permission to share it with AlterNet's readers:
One of the most disturbing things I found at gun shows is how many drooling morons think that they can cultivate an air of "knowing" about guns by behaving casually with, and around them.
One show I attended in riverside was the shortest. Upon entering the door, and taking about 20 steps I had been muzzle flagged at least three times by people waving ____ around. I backed the ___ out of that room most ricky tick.
none of the shootings at gun shows were fatal, however, there was a mass shooting in New Mexico where a boy killed 5 members of his family with a variety of firearms, including an assault rifle... so there's that. Not sure if any of the victims or the perpetrator understood it was #GunAppreciationDay, or if they appreciated their guns.

No one has responded to this thread, so I thought I would post something, so the thread won't feel lonesome or neglected.

Hi, thread.

How ya doin'?

My lovely Mother in her role as Hospital Chaplain once said, "Hunting season wouldn't be nearly as busy if it weren't for hunters getting drunk and falling out of tree blinds or shooting one another."

And this way pre-dated Dick Cheney shooting his buddy in the face. And Cheney is a "responsible gun owner" so you know, it's not the gun's fault the guy got shot in the face.

Being a responsible gun owner does not preclude someone from being careless.

Lol. About the dumbest event ever. Next event: Rape appreciation day.

Kudos Tinsel for reviving this thread.

turns out it gets even better... one of the official sponsors of #GunAppreciationDay was a white supremacist group. some stupid liberal in the media pointed this out.

I also am amused by their "if the blacks owned guns, they wouldve never been slaves." bullshit attempt to try to win back some mainstream sympathy after all the shootings this passed month.

I dont even know how to begin refute.that argument. its totally retarded.

diggler did you spend the day lovingly caressing your precious guns??

This is the only place I've heard of gun appreciation day. None of my gun nut friends (the ones I'm depending on in the event of a zombie apocalypse) even mentioned it.

check out their website. it's important to keep an eye on the nutjobs.

quote about the links to the racist group (link):
But even before their excellent idea gets out of the gate, it stalls out, as obnoxious reporters check the list of "Gun Appreciation Day" sponsors and find that the "American Third Position," a group that purports to represent the "unique political interests of White Americans," is one of the event's sponsors.

So now, Political Media has not only decided to hold its Gun Appreciation Event on a holiday meant to celebrate the life of a black leader who was a symbol of nonviolent protest and who was killed by a white man with a gun, it's done so with the financial help of some yahoo white supremacist group. But this doesn't derail the whole thing, as it's of course just an innocent mistake. Political Media kicks "Third Position" out and appropriately issues a statement, saying, "We have removed the group and reiterate this event is not about racial politics, it is about gun politics."

how come they didn't hold a "brain appreciation day" to celebrate having brains?

note: this is a rhetorical question.

I think I've made it pretty clear, I think we waste too much time focused on the nutjobs. If nobody was watching them, I'd agree with you.

Wow, I was just about to post something to this effect!

Mine would have been more along the lines of "I've given up. Just way too many to keep track of."

So it turns out I guess I actually did post it.
