Hockey team wins twice this weekend

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.), Travis Lynch (White Lake, Mich.) and A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) each tallied two points to lead the University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 6 USCHO/No. 9 USA Today) to a 5-1 victory over Bentley on Friday night (Oct. 7) at Yost Ice Arena.

After trailing 1-0 after the first, Michigan scored twice in the second and three late third-period goals to improve to 2-0-0 for the first time since 2008-09.

Bentley registered the only goal of the first frame when Alex Grieve scored on a power play to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead at 7:06.

Greg Pateryn (Sterling Heights, Mich.) evened the score at 2:45 of the second to tie up the game, 1-1. Mac Bennett (Narragansett, R.I.) and Lynch were credited with assists. Wohlberg then added the go-ahead tally for the Wolverines on the power play, bringing the score up to 2-1 in favor of the Maize and Blue. Treais and Phil Di Giuseppe (Maple, Ontario) got the assists.

After a scoreless beginning to the third period, Alex Guptill (New Market, Ontario) registered the first goal of his career -- with assists from Jeff Rohrkemper (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and Brennan Serville (Pickering, Ontario) -- to increase Michigan's lead to 3-1 at 15:38 of the period. Quickly following suit at 16:44 was senior captain Luke Glendening (Grand Rapids, Mich.) with a tally to stretch the score to 4-1. Wohlberg and Lynch.

With 1:23 remaining in the period, Treais punched in one last goal for the Wolverines to bring the final score up to 5-1 with assists from Lee Moffie (Wallingford, CT) and Luke Moffatt (Paradise Valley, Ariz.).

The Wolverines outshot the Falcons, 49-19. Goaltender Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) turned away 18-of-19 shots on goal.

Michigan returns to Yost Ice Arena to complete the weekend series against Bentley on Saturday (Oct. 8) at 7:35 p.m.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Phil Di Giuseppe (Maple, Ontario) registered two goals, including the game-winning goal, and A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) earned a goal and an assist to propel the University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 6 USCHO/No. 9 USA Today) to a 4-1 win over the Bentley Falcons on Saturday night (Oct. 8) at Yost Ice Arena.

The line of Treais, Di Giuseppe and Luke Moffatt (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) scored the first two Wolverine goals of the evening.

Michigan registered the only score of the first period when Di Guiseppe put the Wolverines up 1-0 at the 10:24 mark. It was Di Guiseppe's first goal as a Wolverine and his second point in the series against Bentley.

The Falcons tied the game 1-1 midway through the second period thanks to Jared Rickford's first goal of the young season.

After an apparent go-ahead goal by Bentley was waved off for goaltender interference, Di Giuseppe took advantage of the power play and reclaimed the lead for the Maize and Blue.

With his team clinging to a 2-1 lead late in the third period, Treais picked up his second point of the evening with a power-play goal to give Michigan a two-goal cushion at the 17:49 mark.

Alex Guptill (New Market, Ontario) closed out the scoring for U-M, putting home an empty-net goal with 48.9 seconds remaining in regulation. Derek DeBlois (Narrangansett, R.I.) and Mike Chiasson (Henderson, Nev.) each picked up their first points of the season with assists on the final Michigan tally. For Chiasson, it marked the first point of his Wolverine career.

Goaltender Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) turned away 21-of-22 shots, while Bentley's Branden Komm allowed three goals on 42 shots in the loss. Hunwick improved his record to 3-0-0 with a 0.74 goals-against average and a .947 save percentage through three games this season.

The Wolverines return to action on Thursday (Oct. 13) when they host ECAC opponent St. Lawrence at Yost Ice Arena. Game time is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
