Ichiro would be the most logical choice in lf...

Since the Tiger signed Torii Hunter to be a stop gap, might aswell sign Ichiro, two hungry all star veterans in the OF with Jackson to form the best OF defense in the AL and the added element of speed. New Lineup:

1-Austin Jackson R
2-Ichiro L
3-Miguel Cabrera R
4-Prince Fielder L
5-V Mart S
6- Torii Hunter R
7- Jhonny Peralta R
8- Alex Avila L
9-Omar Infante R

Pretty Balanced overall and A LOT faster than last year's opening day lineup, which is more of a testament to how slow the team was last year when you add two 37+ veterans and still get considerably faster.

I really wouldn't mind Ichiro for a season. He's a good defender, has some speed, and still can get on base.

Ichiro with NYY Away .282 BAVG .292 OBP .336 SLG .628 OPS

Ichiro with NYY Home .359 BAVG .385 OBP .564 SLG .949 OPS

Last 3 years Away

78.23 RC/650 .298 BAVG .333 OBP .377 SLG .710 OPS 28.03 PA/BB

Ichiro walks less than Delmon Young. His OBP is directly tied to his BAVG. If he doesn't hit, he doesn't get on base.

A platoon of Dirks plus Gomes/Hairston/Ross would be more logical, less costly and most likely provide way more production.

Last 3 years vs LHP

Gomes .296 BAVG .398 OBP .506 SLG .904 OPS

Ross .276 BAVG .352 OBP .530 SLG .882 OPS

Hairston .263 BAVG .308 OBP .464 SLG .772 OPS

Ichiro .292 BAVG .319 OBP .343 SLG .662 OPS

Even Andruw Jones (.342 OBP .487 SLG .829 OPS vs LHP last 3 years) would be a good low cost option (and a plus on defense).

Do you think any of those guys would take a 1yr deal or split playing time though? I don't want to see us sign somebody that's going to block Garcia or Castellanos if we can avoid it.

Ross signed a 1-year $3 Mil to sign with BOS last year

Andruw Jones for the last 2 years, has signed 1-year for $2.0 Mil each year with NYY

Hairston for the last 2 years, has signed 1-year for $1.1 Mil each year with NYM

Gomes signed a 1-year $1 Mil to sign with OAK last year

So, yes, they all would sign 1-year deals. But, you can also sign them to an option year.

I didn't realize that. Good info as usual, sir.

But he serves no purpose, except for defense, which is on the decline.

He would instantly become the best baserunner on the team and his contact skills would be useful in manufacturing runs which the Tigers were pretty poor at last year.

Prob not at SB, but overall baserunning, yes.

Ichiro had a .307 OBP in 2012, so no matter how good a baserunner he may be, he's not getting on base enough for it to make him valuable. Before his mini-resurgence, he was in Brennan Boesch OBP territory. Think about that for a little bit.

Ichiro is in solid decline, nothing about signing him makes a ounce of sense.

Gomes might, don't think Ross will.
