Ihedigbo News

ORLANDO ? The Detroit Lions could have a new starting safety in place as early as today.

The Lions have hosted three veteran safeties on free-agent visits over the last two weeks, and are awaiting a decision by James Ihedigbo on whether he?ll accept their contract offer.

Ihedigbo, 30, played the last two seasons for the Baltimore Ravens, where new Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin was his secondary coach.

He visited the Lions the first week of free agency, but was in between agents at the time.

The Lions offered a two-year deal then, and but Ihedigbo was considering other suitors.

Last week, the Lions hosted Chris Clemons and Thomas DeCoud on free-agent visits, but both players left town without contract offers.

Asked for an update on where things stood at the NFL owners meetings today, Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said, ?Absolutely nothing I?m going to tell you until tomorrow.?

Mayhew is scheduled to meet with beat reporters on Monday.

The Lions are looking for a starter to pair with Glover Quin, one of their top free-agent acquisitions of last off-season.

They released Louis Delmas last month, and were unwilling to pay for the top free agents at the position ? all of whom commanded more money than Quin got last year.

Ihedigbo had a career-high 101 tackles last year in his second season as a starter. Austin trumpeted him as one of the veteran leaders of Baltimore?s secondary at his introductory news conference last month.

No I know why you posted it. I was commenting on the fact that it wasn't and didn't happen. Unless the guy is taking a dozen donuts as a signing bonus we couldn't sign him today anyways.

He is a mediocre player, I just don`t get why some fans have been waiting for him to sign everyday like he is some big name guy.

I still hope they take Pryor or Clinton-Dix in the first

Love Pryor and Clinton Dix. Ihedigbo is a good player though. I am more than comfortable going into the season as a starter and he's an upgrade over Delmas in both ball and tackling.

Ihedigbo number 2 ranked against run. Upgrade over Delmas. Quin moves to free safety

I don`t know if he is better than Delmas and I am a Delmas hater.

There's and upgrade right there. Plus he practices, plus he actually has an interception in the past decade. He sat behind a guy you might have heard of by the name of Ed Reed or he would have been a long time starter.

He sat behind Reed for one year come on man, he beat out Michael Huff this year. The Ravens only wanted to bring him back as a back up.

And people wanted Huff thinking he was an upgrade. Ihedigbo is a good get, like him better than Clemons, coming off a good year and reunited with his coach.

30 years old and hes got 1 year under his belt worth a crap. If its a cheap deal I have no problem with it....we have no depth at safety regardless. I don't see him as someone that's going to change the perception of our secondary. Its still crap. He is good in run support....hes a thumper. But this move does nothing to upgrade our pass defense.

The one think I don't get when he said "I want to go to Detroit" some time ago. Who in the hell wants to come here first?
