I've gotta stop watching FOX News.

And read more. From the president's speech:
"We have difficult work to do in Iraq. We are bringing order to parts of that country that remain dangerous."
"Our mission continues...The War on Terror continues, yet it is not endless. We do not know the day of final victory, but we have seen the turning of the tide."

Obama had been negotiating to extend the occupation, something few news sources report, but this fell through when the Iraqis refused to extend the immunity from law for our troops there.
If there's one thing Americans should not have to obey... it's foreign law... even when we're in foreign countries. Right? That seems fair.
We also missed the Third Anniversary of the Shoe Thrower incident. That happened 12/14/08.

Obama really did not negotiate to keep the troops there. He made little effort to do so. He wanted out so he could claim he fulfilled his promise to end the conflict before the election.

The reason many planners wich to stay is two-fold. 1. Continue to monitor the transition to peace and hope it doesn't collapse into civil war. 2. Iran.

It was over in the summer of 2008...A negotiated deal was signed

"Obama didn't end the War, Bush did, this was planned in 2008." So why aren't you guys blaming Bush for the pullout?
"Obama is crazy for pulling our troops out, this is a disaster!"
Which is it? You don't think another president would have figured out a way to continue the war? How long should we have kept troops there 10 year? 15 years? 50 years?
Can you imagine if Obama had left troops in there, but our American troops were then subject to Iraqi law and Iraqi courts? He would have been crucified the 1st time a US troop was arrested by Iraqis.
The War was an utter failure from the start and we are not one bit safer because of it and we basically handed the region over to Iran when we invaded Iraq. The only thing to do was to bring our boys home and hope the Iraqis can take care of themselves. Obama ramped up Afghanistan 4 fold and drew down troops in Iraq, now that Iraq is over, our troop presence in those 2 theaters has been halved under Obama. As we meet our goals in Afghanistan he's begun a draw down there already, although he still has over 3 times the troops committed to that war as Bush did.
Obama gave a great speech and it angers Cons to see the troops that were there cheering him on. Bottom line is that our brave men and women no longer have to fight in a quagmire in Iraq that did little for the safety of us all. Welcome Home Soldiers!
