Lions operating income

Part of that is the Lions have a relatively new stadium their paying on, they didn't have a ton of revenue, but they weren't the worst, and they spend towards the cap limit each year. i'm not sure what's included in forbes figures but i highly doubt any nfl team is ever truly in the red, so i wouldn't feel too bad for the lions.

the lions were valued at $817 million in 2010, and $844 million in 2011. So even if by some chance they happened to lose $7.7 million in operating income they gained a cool $27 million in value.

for the record Ford bought the team for $4.5 million in 1963. Discounting for inflation (in today's real value) Ford spent $32.5 million for the Lions, so he's only gained about $800 million over the years. Sounds like a pretty good investment.

Some of that has to do with the building of Ford Field and payments related to it.

Ford Field was paid for by the City of Detroit and Wayne County.

the Ford family pays 40 million over 20 years for the naming rights only.

The Old Man has nothing to do with the day to day operations of the Stadium.

Ford Field was 51% paid for by the public. 49% private, which includes the Lions, Ford Motor Company (naming rights) and Comerica Bank. Cost $430 million.

40 million to put the Ford name on it for 20 years...and they have ZERO to do with the day to day operations.

You could be right, you could be wrong, I just know what the internet tells me.

The City paid 51% of the costs so they technically own the buildings, both Comerica and Ford Field. Part of the contract was that the teams were responsible for managing the facilities, but Detroit and Wayne county manage concession and construction contracts.

The Lions and Tigers were both responsible for obtaining at least $50 million from outside community investors, and then the teams themselves were responsible for the difference.

Both have 35 year leases on their stadiums.

Also funny is they originally wanted to name Ford Field the Motordome. Glad they squashed that one.

All bullshit numbers on a spreadsheet, or as the corporate accountants like to call it.. FM... financial magic.

The Forbes evaluation of teams is very much based on their winning record in determining how marketable a team is or may be in the near future.

A team with a bad track record is viewed as being worth less, regardless of holdings or profits.

The Lions come up on the short end of the stick for many years of losing records, as one would expect them to. But it's not like Old Man Ford is coming up short on payroll any time soon.

I don't know of any situation where the assessment of "value" isn't misleading.........

You are wrong. I have a good friend that works for the lions and they run the day to day operations of Ford field. The lions also get the revenue for concerts and other events held at Ford field.
