Mathis resigns with Lions

Good signing

I looked at a lot of 2014 cap numbers by position around the league this morning (probably way more than I should have, I have spreadsheets available if anyone cares about that stuff). The Lions have one of the cheapest secondaries compared to league average, yet they were effective last year. With Slay, Mathis, Ihedigbo, and Quin... They've managed to get great value back there, so kudos to Mayhew/Austin.

We'll have to see how they fair with the changes upfront in 2015.

I'm glad they didn't have to overpay for Mathis. CBs are vastly overpaid for the most part, I was worried he might cash in the chips before retirement. Good signing.

I was a little shocked looking at the numbers...last year 8 teams each had over $15MM committed to CBs alone. The Lions committed less than $3MM to CBs.

Wow.......impressive. Hope Mayhew can do the same with the Dline this year. Need a good draft pick and someone already on the roster to step up.

At the end of last year they were really talking up Webster. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do this year. Van Noy too.

I thought he was going to meet the Vet min.?

1 million in extra cap space. 1.5 total cap hit. Good cheap signing. I need said vet min for him. I believe I said 1 million in space used.

LKP right again.

Nope.. you said no extra...

If he plays like he did last season, this is the biggest bargain in football.

If we don't draft his replacement this year, this is the biggest gamble in football.

If he turns 35 years old on the field next season, this will be the biggest clusterfuck in football.

High risk, high reward move, but I like it, because he was damned good last season.

Color me skeptical that he's gonna be able to play at a decent level at age 35 and 36, particularly in the secondary. Hope I'm wrong, but odds are that he's going to lose a step or two and quickly become a big liability. At least the deal is cheap.

This is more like low-risk, high reward. If he doesn't play well, we have guys coming back from injury to step in. If he does play well, he's a huge bargain.

I said the same about Mathis last year.

I agree. However, there are some guys that can keep it going well into their 30's.

Woodson.

Darrel Green.

I'm sure there are many more.....Mathis clearly is a smart CB and makes up for his physical limits with his brain. Guys like that are more likely keep it up.

Hopefully, he can for at least another year.

We need it!

Great signing...well, until we see how he plays next year. I remember when many were stoked that the Lions re-signed Houston, then he had a tough year and...

Well, Mathis isn't Houston, so hopefully this one works out well.

I still think Mathis was a bit of a liability at the end of the season. He played very well in the beginning, but struggled during the end in my opinion. Cheap deal, worth the signing. Just need Slay to continue to step up so we can shade the safety to Mathis's side.

Mathis had only positive grades from Week 11 on. Some very high. He wasn't a liability at all. You must be thinking of Vaughn when Mathis got hurt in the Dallas game. Another bullshit reason we lost. Mathis injury was huge in that game. Terrence Williams started getting open after that.
