Mattison to stay on staff

glad to hear

he is probably nearing end of his career, his daughter lives here and there is grand child (maybe more by now)

he coached DL for Jack H at Western (which is how he and brady got to know each other)

Maybe Harbaugh could keep Hoke on as the "Running Around in Shorts and Freezing His Ass During the Spring Scrimmage" coach.

Or as the clap coach.

Really, I like Brady and think he left the team better than what he found it. I wish him well.

Personally, I would rather him be in an advisory role. I know that he did a good job with the defense in his time here, but I'd like this to be 100% Jim's team. I don't know the relationship Mattison and Jim have, though, so maybe it could work.

I don't think he's ever coached with Jim, but he's coached for his dad and brother so maybe they gave him solid endorsement.

I didn't realize he'd coached with Jack, but now that you mention John Harbaugh, I remember those two had coached together in Baltimore. It'll be interesting in the next few months to see what Jim does with recruiting and his coaching staff.

Brings some continuity, which is great. Glad to see this.

Yeah DL at WMu. Where h and Brady were both assistant coaches

Wait wait wait, I thought our coordinators were set? I guess those were just rumors and speculation.

So what is definite?

MGoBlue.com only has Harbaugh listed now.

I guess we can pencil in Mattison somewhere on the defensive staff.

some sites are reporting Durkin to Ann Arbor is a done deal, but there's no announcement yet. UF site reported on Dec. 30th they expect a deal "within a week."

Drevno appears to be solid as OC, although, nothing official yet either.

Nothing is official, but MGoBlog is calling Drevno, Durkin, and Mattison "locks" but they're don't know titles.

DJ Durkin is 36 and has been coaching football since 2001; 2005 if you don't count graduate assistant years.

Greg Mattison is 65 and has been coaching football since 1977.

I know in the MGOBlog world that ignores common sense and human nature when opining about football, there is no problem whatsoever with demoting Mattison to work under Durkin... but anyone else concerned by this rumored approach?

Or maybe there won't be as much of a heirarchy on the defensive staff as the job titles indicate... Durkin being DC isn't really putting him senior to Mattison.

I think it depends on Mattison. He clearly was/is very close to Hoke and is at the end of his coaching career. I'm sure there is some sense of relief if he were to focus on recruiting and serve as position coach versus being the DC. And I think the suggestion of a reduced role on MGB comes from 'sources' that first hinted Mattison "would be kept on in some capacity..." and now is confirming he's still recruiting and will stay. The same news came out of Sam Webb and John Bacon and I think all are reporting the same thing - he's staying, title and role TBD.

Would seem appealing to Mattison to be able to stay in A2 and be on staff

Same thinking as over there. They might be called Co-DCs or something like that.

Mattison staying will contribute to continuity of the D for sure, BUT the DBs can't continue to play 10 yards off of the receivers. That has got to change.

Position coach of some kind I speculate. Let Mattison teach micro-theory on this staff.

Hmmm...wonder where Roman goes then. Thought it was speculated hed follow jim here.

nvm...found some news on it. Looks like Roman will be looking for an nfl job in Jax or TB as OC. Not sure who would hire someone that ran SFs offense into the ground...

College football: Roman won't be Harbaugh's offensive coordinator at Michigan

Staff and wire reports

Posted: 12/31/2014 08:32:51 PM PST# Comments | Updated: a day ago

Greg Roman apparently won't be joining new Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh with the Wolverines, at least not as his offensive coordinator.

The Los Angeles Times and FoxSports.com reported that Michigan's new offensive coordinator will be current USC offensive line coach Tim Drevno, who worked under Harbaugh at San Diego (2003-06), Stanford (2007-10) and with the 49ers (2011-13).

Roman was hired as 49ers offensive coordinator shortly after Harbaugh's arrival in January 2011. He became a lightning rod for criticism as the 49ers offense stumbled during an 8-8 season that ended Sunday with Harbaugh's "mutual" departure. Roman also coached under Harbaugh at Stanford (2009-10).

According to the Sacramento Bee, 49ers receivers coach John Morton will be coming to Michigan as well.
