Christ, I used to bounce about 3 miles away from that spot in Saginaw.

No kidding; I used to drive right along and through the northwest corner of that shitpatch when I would take Holland Ave on my way to visit my dad's hick family out in "Rural Merrill (when you use this phrase to refer to Merrill, both words are mispronounced to rhyme with 'squirrel')."

What a freakin' dump.

what do they do for fun out there in Merrill?

what do they drink?

if you showed up with a pack of Mickeys Grenades and Jack, would they know what to do, or would they say "where is the oatmeal stout and small-batch, craft whiskey?"

I just google mapped it. Jesus... that is in the middle of nowhere.

Well, when we used to hang out with our parents' generation as well, we would all drink.

If we hung out without the oldsters, we would drink and smoke pot.

No, we never used to drink that wacky crap when we were younger; just Budweiser or below.

We would definitely know what to do with Jack and Mickey's Grenades.

my grandparents used to have a summer place south of Lexington, MI on Lake Huron.

the development had a lot of cheap cottages - 1/2 bedrooms and an attic - intended as cottages for middle class & Detroit city workers/cops/firemen.

grandpa eventually got rid of it when they ruined the beach by putting up huge rusty steel jetties (intended to stop erosion, but really the cure was worse), and it seemed like more and more of the vacationers moved out and more and more full-time hillbilly residents moved in.

i wonder if the whole area has gone to hell now.

I was a kid back in those days, so I didn't do much more there than ride my bike, and swim in the lake.

It's not that in the middle of nowhere...only about 20 miles from the Holland/Gratiot section of Saginaw.

That's closer than I am to downtown LA.

Screw you Champ!

actually, i just google-mapped the old neighborhood. google didn't apparently leave Lakeshore Rd./MI-25, so there are no streetviews, but there were a couple snapshots people uploaded from around there. a couple of the houses look nice, well kept up. my presumption that the neighborhood was overrun with tweakers and pill-poppers was wrong. apologies.

Lexington was a frequent vacation spot when my kids were kids. I liked the town.

Actually the local people are fine in the areas like Lexington, Port Sanilac, Harbor Beach, etc. It's usually the vacationers who come and tend to leave a mess, garbage on the beach and water, etc.

I just can't fathom anyone considering they are hillbillies because they don't live in a suburban/urban area. It's not like it's Arkansas or anything.

yes, I freely admit I was mistaken, and my presumptions were absurd.

actually used to go fishing with my dad off the breakwater in Lexington harbor. nice little town.

Do you live in Lexington, or just in the general area?

These are raw numbers, no? Per capita is the way to look at it. Michigan's population is about 85% that of Ohio.
