ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team utilized balanced scoring en route to a 66-48 victory over Indiana on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 22) at Crisler Center.
Junior Rachel Sheffer (Watervliet, Mich./Watervliet) led the Wolverines with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor, including 2-of-2 from the line. Senior Courtney Boylan (Chaska, Minn./Chaska) chipped in 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting while contributing five rebounds. Junior Jenny Ryan (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw Nouvel Catholic Central) notched seven points, along with a team-high eight rebounds, to go with three assists and two steals.
Both teams traded baskets early, but Michigan took its initial lead, 6-5, at the 17:45 mark when senior Carmen Reynolds (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) stole the ball, going the distance for an uncontested layup. With the score in favor of the Wolverines (10-9) from a Sheffer hook shot, Michigan mastered a 28-6 run, scoring 14 unanswered points during the stretch for a 38-15 lead with 2:04 remaining. To close out the half, Ryan found junior Nya Jordan (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Community) for a two-point layup, which finished off the scoring, giving the Maize and Blue a 42-19 lead going into the break. Michigan shot 52.9 percent and the 42 points are a season high going into the locker room.
Out the break, Michigan stayed offensively sound with a Boylan two-point jumper in the shot clock's final seconds. The basket contributed to an 8-3 run, pushing U-M's lead to 28 points -- the largest of the game -- at the 16:25 mark of the second half.
The Hoosiers attempted a second-half comeback, connecting on back-to-back triples and cutting the lead to 19 with 13:32 remaining in the game. However, after exchanging baskets for the remainder of the game, Indiana could only close the game to within 18 points down the stretch.
Michigan's defense forced 19 turnovers by the Hoosiers leading to 14 points, while the bench outscored IU's reserves, 18-11. Junior Sam Arnold (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) led the reserves with seven points and two rebounds. U-M found production down low, holding a 34-16 edge for points in the paint.
Jasmine McGhee and Aulani Sinclair paced Indiana's offense. McGhee hit a team-high 15 points and five rebounds, with Sinclair recording 14 points. Additionally, Sasha Chaplin contributed a game-high 10 rebounds for the Hoosiers.
This Thursday (Jan. 26), the Maize and Blue returns to the hardwood for its second matchup of the season against Penn State inside Crisler Center. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
