CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team used a strong first half to upend Illinois in its Big Ten Conference opener, 70-50, on Thursday night (Dec. 30) inside Assembly Hall.
For the second time on the season, four Wolverines scored in double figures. Carmen Reynolds (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) led Michigan with a team-high 16 points from 7-of-11 shooting and surpassed 1,000 career points (1,006).
Courtney Boylan (Chaska, Minn./Chaska) added 14 points, connecting 6-of-12 from the floor, and Jenny Ryan (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) tacked on 12 points, six rebounds and five steals. Rachel Sheffer (Watervliet, Mich. /Watervliet) posted a team-high eight rebounds to complement 10 points.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 12-8 lead with 11:43 to go in the first half, with Reynolds and Boylan pacing the offense with four points each. Coming out of the first media timeout, Boylan hit a jumper in the lane to spark a 19-4 run, and Reynolds and Kate Thompson (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) hit three-pointers to help fuel the tempo. The boost helped Michigan outscore Illinois 20-7 to give U-M a 32-15 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Illinois crept within 13 points of the lead twice. Michigan held a 51-38 lead with 9:56 on the clock and outscored Illinois 19-12 while using a 10-4 run sponsored by shots from Boylan, four points from Ryan, and a Reynolds three-pointer to hold on for the final score.
U-M outscored Illinois in the paint, 34-26, and led the rebounding effort, 38-30. The Wolverines shot 45 percent from the floor and scored 18 points from Illinois' turnovers.
Illinois was led in scoring by Karisma Penn's game-high 22 points (9-of-17) and 11 rebounds, while Kersten Magrum and Ivory Crawford each posted 10 points. The Fighting Illini shot 36.5 percent from the field.
The Wolverines will return to action on Wednesday (Jan. 4) when they travel to East Lansing, Mich., to face rival Michigan State in Big Ten play. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
