ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 4 USCHO.com/No. 4 USA Today) blanked Ferris State (No. 6 USCHO.com/No. 7 USA Today) on Friday night (Oct. 28) with a final score of 4-0 at Yost Ice Arena. It is the first time Michigan has swept the Bulldogs since the 2008-09 campaign.
The Maize and Blue showcased its talent for Parents' Night, with goaltender Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) posting the sixth shutout of his career and his first of the season. Meanwhile, three different lines for the Wolverines registered goals.
Both teams garnered multiple penalties -- 18 total between the two squads -- but nary a power play turned into a goal.
Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) and Phil Di Giuseppe (Maple, Ontario) each reached the four-point mark in the series against Ferris State -- Brown with a 1-3-4 line and Di Giuseppe with a 2-2-4 slash -- while six other Wolverines had at least two.
Michigan posted the only tally of the first period when rookie Alex Guptill (New Market, Ontario) snapped the puck through a dense group of Bulldogs at 5:38 for the first goal of his collegiate career.
Two minors were handed to each team in addition to a myriad of other penalties in the second stanza. Despite trading the man-advantage with Ferris numerous times during the period, Michigan posted three unanswered goals. Travis Lynch (White Lake, Mich.) netted one at 3:20 of the period, followed at 5:02 by A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) when he tallied a rebound goal to bring the score to 3-0. The final goal of the period came at 14:20 after a one-timer courtesy of Brown, with Di Giuseppe and Treais assisting.
A scoreless third period was capped off by Hunwick's sixth career shutout. He turned aside all 24 shots he faced, while Ferris State's CJ Motte allowed four goals on 26 shots.
