The Detroit Tigers rank 12th of 333 international teams surveyed in an ESPN/SportingIntelligence report revealing the sports franchises that spend the most on their players. That ranks third among Major League Baseball teams behind the Dodgers and Yankees.

The Tigers' average player salary is $6.2 million. The total payroll of $173.8 million ranks 11th.

That's a lot of payroll for 28-20. No JV yet, who knows what the fk is up with that. His career could be over. Price will be gone after the season..Cespedes probably as well. Future not looking bright..

Fortunately, most of us saw it coming a couple years ago. So at least it won't be some earth breaking revelation we wake up to.

I've mentally prepared myself for another 1998-2002 stretch. Bring it on.

Tampa Bay and Houston are both..
40-30

Detroit
34-34

Looks like we are in for a long rebuild unless we can start playing well...
Hope Mr I's kids are up to the task?

JV and King Felix both signed extensions around the same time.

What a kick to the groin the JV contract is turning out to be for Detroit.

Justin Verlander rhp
7 years/$180M (2013-19), plus 2020 option
•7 years/$180M (2013-19), plus 2020 vesting option •signed extension with Detroit 3/29/13
•replaced final two years of previous deal
•13:$20M, 14:$20M, 15:$28M, 16:$28M, 17:$28M, 18:$28M, 19:$28M, 20:$22M vesting option
•2020 option guaranteed with top 5 finish in 2019 Cy Young vote
•award bonuses, including $0.1M for All-Star selection
•no-trade protection

Looks like one of the best deals in baseball Seattle extending King Felix.

Felix Hernandez rhp
7 years/$175M (2013-19)
•7 years/$175M (2013-19) •signed extension with Seattle 2/13/13
•$6M signing bonus
•13:$19M, 14:$22M, 15:$24M, 16:$25M, 17:$26M, 18:$26M, 19:$27M, 20:$1M conditional club option
•club may exercise 2020 option if Hernandez spends more than 130 consecutive days (in one season or from one season overlapping into the next) on disabled list with right elbow surgery or other procedure to repair right elbow injury
•award bonuses: $0.2M for Cy Young. $0.1M for WS MVP. $50,000 each for LCS MVP, Gold Glove, All-Star
•full no-trade protection (earns 10-and-5 rights in July 2015)
•at signing, contract is the largest ever for a pitcher

Luck of the draw? Both pitchers were great at the time of the extensions.

For sure.. Unless JV goes and Talks to Greg Maddux he will never get by with a 90-92 MPH fastball.. Shame because we all thought he was the one..

Verlander just turned 30 when he signed his extension. Felix was 26 when he signed his. One is entering his prime, the other is leaving it.

Tigers payroll

64,868,750 more the the twins and
60,813,100 more then KC..

Needs a bump so we can note the playoff teams and be pissed. I guess it just proves that good farm systems really does help.

Now I guess the Dodgers have both a lot of money and a good farm system lol..

Rangers, Yankees and possibly LAA are also probably the other AL teams (you showed all 5 NL and only 2 AL).

If this happened, 7 of the 10 playoff teams would then be in the top 15, 5 in the top 10.

Additionally, those were opening day salaries. Trades have reduced the Tigers payroll and significantly increased KCR (Cueto, Zobrist) and PIT (Soria, Ramirez). Even the Mets added Cespedes.

Additionally, the list of worst teams in the MLB

1. PHI 61-97 (9th in payroll)
2. CIN 63-95 (14th)
3. ATL 64-94 (23rd)
4. OAK 66-93 (27th)
5. COL 66-92 (20th)
6. MIL 68-90 (19th)
7. MIA 69-89 (30th)
8. DET 73-85 (4th)
9. SDG 73-85 (22nd)
10. CHW 74-84 (15th)

A lot of low payroll teams in the 10 worst.

I will wait until the final payroll for each team is announced to draw any conclusions. Still, preliminary results show, for most teams, you need top 15 payroll. It certainly helps to develop your own talent, and when you are close (i.e. KCR), spend at the trade deadline.
