MSU Vs Utah State

looks like the o-line is going to be this team's greatest weakness again this year, followed by the defensive secondary (again). Let's hope Heyward/Scott doesn't become Dantonio's Jackson/Goins or Davis/Goins

I feel like there is so much talent in secondary for them to be this bad. We play so soft back there. Josiah Scott getting injured really hurts. Butler got lit up a few times. Layne looked really good.
Edit: I don’t think it was really the secondary that got lit it, it’s our linebackers. We’re always great against the run because that’s what our linebackers are built to do...you put them in coverage and they get exposed year after year.

That was my observation too about the coverage. It didn't seem like USU wanted to nor could they really throw it down the field, but we couldn't stop their underneath stuff, and that goes back to the linebackers.

The biggest disappointment was the inability of either line to really control the game. As mentioned the O-Line didn't really control things and though USU did not have much in the way of rushing yardage, it seemed like they were able to run it when they needed to.

To paint a rosier picture, it may turn out that USU is a decent team. I had read they returned quite a few players from a team that at least played in a bowl game last year. And that pick 6 thrown by Lewerke changed everything when it looked like MSU had established control of the game. All in all not a disaster but certainly a troubling performance for a team with 19 starters back and some big expectations. Next weekend could end very badly without some improvements this week.
