Norris to the pen 2020

So over his past few starts he has only been pitching 3 innings which has led me to speculate that they are going to move him to the pen next year.

Here are a few interesting stats. (last 3 years 2016-2018)

pitches 1-15 .596 OPS
pitches 61-75 1.171 OPS

1st time faced in a game .610 OPS
3rd time faced in a game 1.171 OPS

We have a few guys that should go to the pen. Maybe they can still use him as a starter for 3 innings and then use another starter for three innings then BP from there.

I believe the plan going into this season was for him to be in the pen. He only went into the rotation when we were missing 4 of 5 starters.

oh...so you believe what they say. Do you really think they would come out and say they were grooming him to be a relief pitcher?

Maybe you are right. But my money would be on him being a reliever next year.

This concept doesnt even make sense . How would pitching 3 innings be grooming him to be a reliever ? Relief pitchers tend to pitch one inning , or come in for a matchup ( lefty vs lefty ) and if he was to be the long reliever , well he was/is a starter , he doesnt need to get groomed on that either .

grooming is probably a poor choice of words. Perhaps I should have said they are letting him pitch 3 innings to see what they would have if they move him to the pen. Not exposing him to a second and 3rd time through the order.

IMO he hasn't shown that he can stay healthy/durable for long enough periods of time to be a starter. He also runs out of gas early. I've been saying he should be moved to the pen for over a year now. He's at 126 innings which is 25 more than he's ever pitched. 23 total starts this year. All career highs.

Gardenhire is not, to me, the kind of manager who would take that approach to managing a pitching staff.
