North Carolina law bans science

link.
"A new law in North Carolina will ban the state from basing coastal policies on the latest scientific predictions of how much the sea level will rise, prompting environmentalists to accuse the state of disrespecting climate science."
main stream news reporting is so awful... they let one of the bill's supporters get this quote in, and of course don't bother talking to the people who conducted the underlying research, or of course, reporting on the research itself (!), or at least linking to it so people could make up their own minds. it's just he-said/she-said... nothing more:
Tom Thompson, president of NC-20, a coastal development group and a key supporter of the law, said the science used to make the 39-inch prediction was flawed...

'I don't want to say they're being dishonest, but they're pulling data out of their hip pocket that ain't working,' he said of the commission panel that issued the prediction, the middle in a range of three predictions.

hope they interview him again in 20 years when he's standing underwater, and still insisting it's dry land.

That would be a neat thing to see.

They could also hire him:

"There is no rise in sea level. Their numbers were wrong. That liquid around me is not water, it is something else."

maybe he thinks they underestimated the prediction and it should have been greater than 39 inches???

still, this snipit is just that, a snipit. what is the timeframe they are estimating this change will take place? if they claimed this will happen in 1 year or even 10 years then i would say unlikely. not impossible, just highly unlikely as that would be an average rise of 3.9 inches per year for 10 years. in truth the average sea level has only been rising by a few millimeters a year since the 1950s according to:

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/...-east-coast-us-science-nature-climate-change/

"Analyzing tide-level data from much of North America, U.S. Geological Survey scientists unexpectedly found that sea levels in the 600-mile (1,000-kilometer) stretch of coast from Cape Hatteras (map), North Carolina, to the Boston area climbed by about 2 to 3.8 millimeters a year, on average, between 1950 and 2009."

But granted that is only one extremely small snipit.

No one is arguing that the sea levels are rising. No one is arguing that humans are contributing to that problem. The entire question is around projected future rise in the tides.

However, Earth has proven to be a very cyclical entity, moving from periods of relatively high temps like when the dinos roamed to relatively low temps during the last ice age. In addition to the human element, the solar element has been proven to be impacting the Earth's average temp and increase in sea levels.

Not saying we shouldn't minimize our impact on global warming, don't forget there are billions of people every day breathing in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide and those numbers are predicted to climb. In fact, the increase in human population has run fairly parallel to the increase in CO2 and the increases in sea levels.

So, does that mean we need to just go kill billions of humans? That would have a bigger impact on the sea level rise problem than trying to get companies to not produce green house gases, not to mention nations like China who are well known violators of internationally agreed upon ways to filter and reduce the Carbon Footprint.

Here's a thought...eliminate China's impact in both the human element and their violations of CO2 policies and let's see how that impacts the sea levels. No? We can't just destroy an entire nation and their people? Well, in that case, let's go on a witch hunt and try to destroy what we can, the Evil Americans and their Corporations! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

here's an alternate view of your alternate view:
Yup, turns out that even people who claim that global warming isn't happening think that John L. Casey, the director and sole named employee of the SSRC, is a "scam artist trying to get his hands in your pocket" who lacks "any credibility in climate research." Indeed, the SSRC's website acknowledges that Casey lacks both education and experience with climate science.

...he has an undergraduate degree in physics and math, a master's in management, and appears to lack any sort of formal background or experience with climate science. That's... not too good.
google is fun.

I guess that's the difference between you and me. I read a number of opinions, and evaluate the soundness of their reasoning before reaching one myself. you google until you find one that fits your views, then you run with it.

...
no. he thinks they way overestimated it, because he wants to get permits to build all sorts of commercial developments on the existing coast & get the state taxpayers to foot the bill for the necessary infrastructure to support his developments (roads, sewers, power lines, cables) so he can make more money, even though in a few decades, all of this will be underwater, or subject to excessive coastal flooding. but he and the other members of his organization will be long gone with the money by then.

I'm disappointed I have to explain this to you.

given the thread title, I figured Red would've commented sooner. maybe he's down at the Atlantic Coast conducting his own measurements, doing science in defiance of the NC state legislature. that would be great.

Not really running with anything. Simply posting a link that leads to an alternate point of view. Diversity, as you know, is our greatest strength.

:bs:

you posted an ignorant, unscientific point of view. it has no place in the debate.

Right, no place in the debate. I forgot.

that's good you only forgot; I was thinking maybe you didn't understand it in the first place, and I'd have to explain science to you before we could continue.

Well, I'm Class of '79 so forgetfulness is something to be dealt with. I could be wrong but my recollection is that you're Class of '09. Is that right? Thirty years ahead of you, I'm struck that I've probably never been as sure of anything as you appear to be of everything. Funny.

Something I do know is that the fellows at East Anglia are complete jokers, as is Mann, the hockey stick Nittany Lion guy. Frauds, even. So is Casey a scam artist? I have no idea, some of those NASA guys are; one in particular. But please don't pretend there's not money and politics in play on your side of the argument. Way more, in fact.

Based on many of our previous threads with opposing views, I will forgive you for not catching that I was joking this time. ;)

Shhhhh. Don't say anything that would raise suspicion.
