As fans, we always seem to think we know more than NFL head coaches. We call them out, we see what they didn't... we're armchair geniuses.

Well, Caldwell seems to think this team is "close" to a turnaround.

Okay Coach Caldwell, I personally think you're an idiot. I think this team is closer to the 0-16 team that it is to the 2014 team. I don't see a turnaround even in the same neighborhood as this team.

So, if this team finishes with even close to a .500 record over the remaining games.. I'll never talk shit about a coach again. I will never question them again, or assume I know the first thing about football. I will sit back, enjoy the games, and stop thinking I am smart.

But if this team finishes about 3-13, which is where I see them right now, then I know at the very least Caldwell is an idiot, and he's really no better than any of us at running this shitshow.

It's the ultimate test. We will see if we fans are anywhere near as smart as we think. Because short of LKP, I doubt any Lions fan, casual or die hard, thinks we're "close".

I see them closer to a .500 team. They do have some easier opponents after week 5. Unfortunately I think they will be 0-5 and out of the playoff hunt after the AZ game. Hell, realistically they will be out of it if they lose on Monday.

C'mon...what's he supposed to say?

Plenty of head coaches have called out their teams. There's no reason to piss down our backs and tell us it's raining.

The best sound bytes in the NFL ("PLAYOFFS?!") come from coaches who tell it like it is. If he's lying through his teeth because "he's supposed to" then he's still a douche, and one on record too.

But is this one on the players? Do something different and call out Mayhew, or Lombardi. He won't do that. Company man. He'll get fired when the new GM comes to town. Until then, "we're fixing it" will be the mantra. Like Marinelli and his shovel, that's what we've got.

I'm kind of sick of all this "say the right thing" nonsense. I hope Caldwell is right about a turnaround but I doubt it if he refuses to think there's a problem. Everyone has looked "great" at camp but magically looks like shit when the games count. How does he explain that?

The Lions offense was playing against the Lions defense. They were both equally bad so they had success against the other unit?

You'll never question him if he gets to 8 wins? When basically after Arizona probably has the weakest schedule in the universe.

Easier like Minnesota easy?

Nope, if he can turn it around, I won't.

Because I call bullshit on the "easy schedule" crap. Right now we're playing like the worst team in the NFL... maybe the second worst with the Bears. There is no easy schedule when you suck this bad.

If he can get us bad to mediocre, it gives me hope.. but it also shows he knows a hell of a lot more than I do, because I see no reason to believe we can even begin to hope to be mediocre.

If I were coach of this team, I would say "damn, we suck, and 1-15 wouldn't surprise me a bit". He says "we're close to turning it around". Can't both be right.

8 and 8 would suck regardless, especially after a 11-5 season. Yes, other people look at Detroit as easy.. nonetheless, anyone in the league should get us to 8 wins.

Not buying it bud. You don't lose the strength of your defense, two first round picks in the middle, and not regress a few games. 8-8 is where I thought we'd be anyway. Then the last three games happened, and I think it would take a miracle to be 8-8.

Way too PC for me. It's okay to get on the podium and vent a little frustration about the team, call out the guys (not anyone specific, team units) for not living up to the potential.

All the coachspeak is irrelevant anyway since we don't know what goes on behind closed doors. Getting worked up and talking about how shitty the season has gone to the media might play well with the fans, but that's about it. When you realize that 99% of these quotes are either bullshit or vague cliches, it's easier to give them little thought.

I think it's a bit different with the Detroit Lions organization. You can actually see the coaches becoming Lionized, and that podium is a good indication of that. If he drops the "my pick is sharp and my will is outstanding" line next week, then he should be fired on the spot.

That quote will live on for another 100 years. Outstanding

In Rod we trust.

We've had some gems over the years haven't we? I even had a poster on the old ESPN boards make me a t-shirt with those exact words on it with a picture of Rod at a press conference. Same poster even made a video that was a parody of a Wu-Tang song. Wish I could dig that up...

I've always wondered what would have happened had we kept Moeller. He did a decent job as the interim and the players, by all accounts, loved him. In a parallel universe Gary Moeller coached the Lions to a Super Bowl in his first full season in 2001. We're stuck in this version which is hell on my liver....

I don't remember the Wu Tang parody but I do have this forever bookmarked.
