OL or Secondary

Def need high-round help on the OL..BUT the Lions still have lots of questionable and oft-injured RBs by committee, and who knows who will come out of the Best, Leshoure, Smith, and Morris merry-go-round intact (if anyone at all will) for/during next season?

You dont need a great back to have a good running game. Make the o-line better and the rushing attack will get better with the talent we have at the position.

It sure seems that RB will once again be a R1 / R2 selection based on Best still being concussed and who can say with certainty what Leshoure will be able to do when he heels...ahem, I mean heals.

You can always grab an RB in later rounds.

OLine all day as long as the value is there...It will be interesting to see what OLine prospects are available at whatever draft slot we end up at. I would like to see a solid OT drop to us but I really doubt that is going to happen. If a solid DB was available I would be fine with the selection though.

Who wants to guess that Mayhew/Schwartz again goes BPA (except perhaps @ K/QB/WR) in the first and maybe second round(s), regardless of actual need?

Actually those spots are the just about the only positions that the Lions wouldn't be filling a need sooner or later by drafting BPA anyway....dlol.

Unfortunately it looks like the top OL is going to be in the first 10 picks and we've played ourselves out of that. (Not that I'm complaining really.) But I'm sure there's a diamond in the rough out there that can help us out.

Lions could still trade up, can't they?

:)

This should be a deep OL draft. DeCastro, Glenn, Kalil, Reiff, Martin, Sanders, Konz, Jones, Brewster and a couple others are all 1st round talent. That means there should be several of them slipping into round two or three when you consider all the other positions that typically get drafted high. This is a good year to snag a couple OL in the first half of the draft, even if you don't grab one with your first pick.

I'll second that, last years draft class was weak in comparison we could grab a couple guys who could come in and start right away.

Oh, I'm not arguing a RB can be acquired in later rounds, nor am I saying RB should be picked up at all. I'm just saying with Best and Leshoure not being exactly the healthiest of options, not to mention Morris, KS, and how many other backups who have gotten dinged up, I would not be surprised to see Mayhew & Co grab yet another RB in R1 or R2.

I would. There's guy all over the place playing well without being a 1st or 2nd round pick. Its near impossible to get a good LT after round 2. But its impossible to get a good corner after round 2. So that could dictate but I'd still like OL first. But if we went LT and G first two rounds and picked up a FA CB that could work out well.

With the team not looking like perennial losers, there should be the benefit that comes with most teams where players wouldn't mind playing for a winner. Between FA and the draft there should be some sort of upgrade for both o-line and secondary.

It is? Tell that to Asante Samuel, Brent Grimes, Ike Taylor, and Tramon Williams

Add Cortland Finnegan and Lardarius Webb with their stellar play this year

add up the numbers of CBs drafted after round 2 the last 5 years and tell me how many are starting in the NFL.

after round #2 it gets slim...it can be done but not very often.

Yeah, but its similar with a lot of positions...Actually, there was an article last year about how RBs taken after round 2 rarely last. It basically debunks the myth that you can easily find great rbs late. It can be done, but not very often.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft2011/news/story?id=6389978

RBs with 5+ seasons of 1000 yards:
Picks 1-45: 29
Picks 46+: 3

I don't think LT is much different than CB.

Personally, I'd rather grab a corner in FA because it takes too long for them to develop.

for sure I agree CB in FA is the way to go...find one that fits your system and plug him in....unless you are in position to grab an elite one in the draft.
