OT: Peyton Manning

The Colts announced Monday that Peyton Manning (neck) will stop practicing and he is considered doubtful for Sunday's game against the Texans.
Panic is now justified. Manning's back is sore, his triceps is weak and his velocity on throws is not there. All this stems from neck surgery rehabilitation which has gone slower than anyone predicted. In a statement, the Colts admitted that "as of now Peyton continues to deal with a complicated neurological recovery, the end date of which is unpredictable." His consecutive games played streak will almost certainly be snapped this Sunday and previous reports that Manning could miss 4-5 appear credible.

Wasn't this the same kind of thing that ended Sterling Sharpe's career? I predicted earlier this off season here that the Colts would be bottom 5 without Manning, and I think this will put Indy in the running for the suck for Luck race. I don't think Manning will play anytime soon this year if at all.

What procedure did Manning have? Discectomy or laminectomy? I'm surprised he didn't search out more conservative treatment before his first surgery. Cervical disc herniations/bulges aren't that difficult to treat in most circumstances.

He's got some major nerve damage, it's what you get for repeated stingers (in football lingo, I don't know the proper term). Basically your whole right side is on fire, and you get some numbness/weakness in the muscles.

This has me wondering if this football season is gonna be one of those huge flip-flop years; like one where the Texans might actually win their division and Dalton gets the bengals to a .500 or better record, and Vick plays like he did (garbage) before he got arrested and the eagles don't do jack.

Chris Mortensen is reporting that Peyton had cervical fusion surgery this am. The normal recovery is 2-3 months. I believe he is done for the year and you have to question his future to be honest and if he will ever play again.

As previously stated on Monday, Sept. 5th, Peyton Manning has undergone further testing and consultation with several specialists regarding his rehabilitation. The results of these tests and the consensus of the consultations was that further surgery was warranted. Peyton has undergone this surgery today by having a single level anterior fusion. The surgery was un-eventful.

This procedure is performed regularly throughout the country on persons from all walks of life, including professional football players. Two former Colts players had this same procedure last winter and have fully resumed their careers. Rehabilitation from such surgery is typically an involved process. Therefore, there will be no estimation of a return date at this time. We will keep Peyton on the active roster until we have a clearer picture of his recovery process.

Peyton will immediately begin the rehabilitation regimen mapped out by the surgeon. We anticipate no further updates or availabilities beyond those required by the NFL Media Policy for the immediate future.
