link.

$125 Billion is TWICE Russia's entire defense budget.

the money we waste is twice what Russia spends. And yet hysterical comments from generals, admirals, "think tanks," and Senators freaking out about being out spent on defense will still get plenty of air time.

overall we spend NINE times what Russia spends on defense.

$125 billion over 5 years. It is reported that Russia's military budget is about $70 billion per year.

Also, an entry level US soldier makes about $19,000 per year compared to the reported $9000 per year for a Russian soldier.

according to the article most of the waste comes from overstaffing at the administrative level. think extra brigadier general HR managers sitting behind desks in Arlington, VA, and as noted in the article, tons of military contractors making well into 6 figures.

the report also just went after the low-hanging fruit as well; presumably by comparing what we spend to what China, Russia, etc spend, we really could cut back. or not, I guess. yay, Neverending War On Terror

I believe that...bureaucratic waste is rampant at ALL levels of government.

Be hard pressed to find a department that wastes more then this one. I'm sure it's possible but I doubt it.

the entire budget of teh department of labor for FY 2016 was $13.2 billion. DOJ: $0.12 Billion. HHS and education are a lot more I think, but haven't been able to find numbers easily.

During the Bush administration the costs of the Iraq and Afghanistan occupations were not on the books; those were paid through "supplemental" shakedowns, er "requests" that the DOD made to congress every quarter. anyone who opposed these was lambasted for not "supporting the troops" or "giving comfort to our enemies."

looks like they still do it this way: link.

real late-period Roman Empire kinda stuff ... opening up the public treasury with little to no oversight or scrutiny just to keep the generals from marching on Rome.
