Question Dirks or Garner

Over at the old ESPN board sbee started a thread "Scherzer for Brett Garner" One of the poster is wanting Garner somewhat And I'm in a little argument.
Of these two outfielders which would you want to start for a season?
Detroit's Dirks or make that trade for the Yank's Garner.
The way I see it Tigers got Raburn or Dirks and Young that are better offensive to play left.
But Dirks seems to be the better of the three defensively.
So a little help for my argument should you have the time. And I've pointed out the Homerun difference, too start.

hes an UFA. go sign him....why would you trade scherzer for him?

But as far as your argument goes....id rather have gardner in the line up instead of dirks. Gardner would be decent in the lead off spot for us and is more reliable speed on the base paths than dirks. Dirks is fast...but it hasnt translated into SBs. Dirks is a perfect platoon guy until he shows he can hit for a better average.

keep Scherzer, thou Gardner would help much more than Dirks, and would be a huge improvement over Jackson in the leadoff spot, you can't just get rid of one of your better starters. imo

Just about anyone. Dirks didn't show much last season with the bat.

I talked with sbee about trading for Gardner right after the Tigers lost the ALCS. Also wondered about trading for Zobrist to play 2B.

I just wasn't sure if we could pull these off with pieces other than any starting pitchers on the Tigers, with other players on the team and minor leaguers other than Turner/Castellanos.

Fucious didn't want another no power outfielder, but a leadoff hitter that has a good obp and can steal bases at will and the best LF defense in the large Comerica leftfield would be tremendous. Let the other hitters be the power hitters to drive them in. All the poor choices in the top 3 spots of the batting order for much of the year, and Leyland's refusal to move a player up in the order from 7th or 8th probably cost the Tigers and Cabrera and others many runs and rbi.

it would have been interesting to see how the Tigers behind him in the order could do, knowing mostly fastballs are coming with him on 1st.

Dirks is a fringe MLB player, definitely not a starter. If Dirks gets more than 150 plate appearances, then something went terribly wrong. I don't think you trade Scherzer for Gardner, though. Scherzer has his mechanical problems, but he is capable of shutting down the best line ups when he is on.

So, is "neither" an option?

i still dont know why were talking trades when he doesnt belong to any team.....is he not a UFA? am i mistaken or missing something here??

Gardner is under team control for a couple of more years. I believe this is his first year of arbitration. I don't think he hits FA until 2015, assuming the Yankees tender him a contract offer.

He won't be a free agent until 2015
