Get StartedHe is in the last year of his deal so it won't hurt us later.
knew he was going nowhere...
That was a gimme. But this opens up to him being cut next season.
he's not signed for next season...hopefully he just fades away after 2013
Makes sense. Even if he sucks, we can't draft an entirely new line in one year. We have one true building block on the line in Reiff. Sims doesn't require upgrading, but he's not young either. Gosder they probably want to resign but will be a UFA. Backus is nearly done.
On one hand, I selfishly wanted him cut for his poor play. On the other, we have enough holes on the team that we don't need to be making extras and putting ourselves in poor position to take BPA in the draft or negotiate with free agents.
I definitely wanted him cut and I'm a little shocked he didn't get an extension.
Jeff Backus - T - Lions Lions LT Jeff Backus is more likely to play in 2013 with C Dominic Raiola restructuring his contract and staying in Detroit.
Backus and Raiola have played together since the Lions selected both in the first two rounds of the 2001 draft. If Backus, 35, returns, that would seem to make it less likely free agent RT Gosder Cherilus will be re-signed. 2011 first-round pick Riley Reiff would be the favorite to start on the right side. GM Martin Mayhew has said he's "optimistic" Backus, who has one year left on his deal, will be back. Source: Detroit Free Press Feb 14 - 2:42 PM
I have to admit I don't really understand the restructure/back-loading and how much of a cap hit you might take.
