Reid ends filibuster of judicial and executive nominees

Thanks for the update.

I haven't been paying attention to the news today because I'm busy watching my own 30 Rock marathon on Netflix.

That Tracy Jordan is one funny bastard.

I've never watched that show, unless you count flipping channels past it.

anyways, now presumably Obama will be able to fill the vacancies in various district & circuit courts around the country, as well as fill vacancies in some of the federal agencies so they can do their jobs.

then in 3 years, President Christie will presumably replace most of them (not the judges).

This two-edged sword will someday cut the present wielders. Another ad-hoc motion to alter the face of our government. I never cared when the opposing party applied this tactic. And now the a-hole Rep. guy will vote to end it in every circumstance if the Reps. gain control of the Senate. Out of spite. But the Dems are acting out of spite as well. Spiteful times. We need to simply vote 'em all out of office and start fresh. But that will never happen.

And we are supposed to have a Constitutionally Limited Republic, not a democracy.

I think at least they should have to really fillibuster, not just say they are

Yeah, I never watched it when it was on the air either, I only started watching it after I subscribed to streaming Netflix.

I watched the pilot and I was hooked; I've been pretty much watching it non-stop for the last four and a half days.

Near the end of day three I started using meth in order to stay awake to be able to continue watching.

The show actually seems to have gotten funnier; I don't know if it's really funnier, or if it's the sleep deprivation induced hallucinations I've been starting to have.

Netflix is weird because you start making references that are dated/out of sync relative to everyone else. We just ripped through all the Breaking Bad Netflix has to offer (still need to find that last season) so we're referring to that all the time now. My wife texted "pollos" last time we needed to meet when she was done shopping and she printed the following sign and put it on my office door:

yes, I know it goes both ways

still
I'd prefer a straight up down vote to the BS procedures in place now.

I don't agree. The operative word in Constitutionally Limited Republic is "Limited." But that went out the window decades ago and the momentum is too overwhelming to stop now.

Harry Reed appeared to agree with me on this, but even in 2005, he was obviously pandering.

there have been two major counterarguments to this I've since read:

1.) obviously, Conservatives have not much to fear, since Obama has governed as a center-right politician, and his appointees have been thus far, nowhere near the sort of socialist radicals we were lead to believe.

one of his judicial nominees was the private sector attorney responsible for crafting Starbucks entire anti-union employment strategy. Now there's a judge Conservatives should love!

so small-government "I don't need no stinkin' FDA, I test my own food and drugs, and let "the market" decide what's safe and what's not" conservatives like you have nothing to worry about.

2.) not once...NOT ONCE has a filibuster at the federal level ever been used to protect the rights of a minority group. On the contrary, the most famous use was Strom Thurmond's long filibuster against the voting rights act. and regardless, Harry Reid's change wouldn't affect the rights to filibuster laws and Supreme Court justices, just federal district and circuit judges, and agency appointees. so... spare us.

Harry reid as majority leader has had over 400 filibusters, lyndon johnson had 3. Obama has had 82 nominations filibustered, more than every other president combined.

There's a fundamental shift in government now, the minority party doesn't realize thay elections matter. The concept of waiting until you have the votes to pass your agenda is gone
