Then these following pitchers (first 3 seasons) His ERA+ is 94 so far:
Randy Johnson (98, started at age 24)
Greg Maddux (92)
Tom Glavine (87)
Roy Halladay (86)

Feel free to add more.

I think Rick is going to have a big year this year. I really hope that light bulb turns on and he starts really dealing... I mean he should be facing back end of the rotation guys.... He just needs to pitch inside all day every day.... I am very excited for Rick this year.. I am hoping for a 17-9 season from him...

If you look a little deeper, all of the guys mentioned broke through in their 3rd year. I think the overall point being that Porcello could still improve is a good one, but you're cherry picking and spinning a little with your list.

I think the concern with Porcello is that his best year was his first and then he regressed. It would be nice to see him improve in 2012.

Sometimes it is easy to forget how young Porcello is. I really hope he starts to put it together this year. It is so tough for a pitcher to put together a game on the nights when you just don't have your best stuff, and it definitely takes some time for pitchers to finally figure out how it is done. Porcello also seems to just lose focus for one bad stretch a game. I think that he is a hard worker, and I think that it also helps to see JV out there every 5th day. I really do think that RP will have a solid year this year.

Me too Bigbob. He is really a good pitcher overall but his youth gets in the way. the one thing that scares me with him is our defense when he plays. He is such a ground ball pitcher and I hope they never run out Miggy and Raburn out there on him.

A day off or rain out or two and he'll be facing #1 and #2 guys.

So true about the defense...

He did pitch well enough to win in that playoff game 163 verses Minnesota in 2009.. So hopefully there will be few rainouts..

Rick is never going to be an ace. He's never going to be even a solid number 2. What he will be is solid 3 guy that gives you five maybe six innings and keeps you in the ballgame. 17-9 is a little much to expect. I'm thinking one day he will be a consistent 13 to 14 win guy.

You don't know that Rick wont become an Ace or a solid #2.

How many people thought Cliff Lee would be an Ace?

Especially since he didn't even make his own team out of ST the year he first became one.

Porcello has all the tools needed to be an Ace, it's just about how well he polishes them.

I don't care what # starter he is but he better go more than 5 innings. Rather have him go 8 and give up 4.

I don't want to hear about Porcello polishing his tool.

And yet you picked that out, that tells us a lot.

I don't agree that he has the tools to be an ace. Not so far, at least.

He doesn't have great velocity, great control or great movement. I think his ceiling is as a reliable ground ball pitcher. I think if he can get his WHIP down to 1.2, he could be a pretty solid major leaguer.

I've yet to see skills that indicate that he could be a number 1.

He needs to gain consistency with his slider and gain some fucking stamina.

The guy completely loses his velocity after 75 pitches.

Pull him prior to the 5th and hed have like a sub 1 era lol.

Might as well use BP by committee. I don't care whether you're a number 1 or 5 you better be able to pitch innings. 5-6 innings stink.
