Watched SNL yesterday for the first time in years, the guy that does sanders is pretty good, other than that though, I must say it's really not very funny at anymore..in fact it was pretty stupid I thought, I don't beleive I really laughed at anything. I mean it was really dumb.

The guy that does Sanders...

SNL really isn't funny any more. They hit pretty good every so often, but it's sure not the show I wanted to watch every week growing up.

Never was as good as SCTV in my opinion.

The Farley era was the last of good run they had. It should have been cancelled along with the likes of David Letterman 12-15 years ago.

It makes money.

It makes money because young people watch it.

Young people watch it because they have no idea how good it once was.

Young people are stupid.

When I was young I used to hear old people talk about how the world was going to hell in a handbasket.

Every day that I get one day older (which happens every single day) I get one day more convinced that those old bastards were absolutely right.

really? I was under the impression SNL's core audience had been skewing toward an "older & lamer" crowd for a while now.

young kids watch youtube videos.

I watched SNL from 75-80 and rarely after. Haven't watched it in decades.

Well, the cast members seem to continue to get older, then they leave the show and get replaced by cast members who are generally younger

So I figure it's the same with the audience.

The original cast, the ones who aren't dead are eligible for social security.

They were all a lot younger years ago when they were on the show.

You missed out on some pretty good skits in the 90's:

If you have ever watched any of the 'documentary' type shows on SNL, one of its main characteristics is to reinvent itself with new cast members and survive. But now in the age of on-line demand content, it's hard to say if SNL will make it. If the NBC Nightly News is on its deathbed, so too is SNL.

I think the biggest mistake the show ever made was the one season when they brought in guys like Randy Quaid and Jay Moher who were already known comedians but who were not from sketch backgrounds. I don't watch too much, but I've always liked the fresh blood that comes up and adds to the show.

And, one saving grace for the show is the upcoming election. There is an actual correlation between ratings and election years, especially when you have a cast member that can nail the candidates.

I think Hillary, the Donald and just about any other GOP candidate will be pretty easy to spoof and run with for months.

There was a point where I thought of the Daily Show as just a ripoff of Weekend Update. I also thought Weekend Update was the best part of SNL and would flip to something else when Norm Macdonald was done.

Weekend update just rips off real time on friday night.

I still think it's good, they had shitty hosts the last two times but it's usually good. Cecily strong, Keenan thompson, Jay Pharoah and others are good.

I love the show in the dvr era, it sucked having to sit through shitty skits at 1230, now I just watch it in the morning am skip any bad skits.

The most pernicious thief regarding that was Chevy Chase 40 years ago when Bill Maher spent his Friday nights bussing tables in real time.
I always watch both and it seems like there are always a few "borrowed" jokes. Granted they have the same headlines to work with so there will be some similarities but it's been pretty blatant a few times

Two different comedy writers come up with the same current events topical joke at the same time?

Inconceivable!

Off the top of my head I would've guessed Real Time's been around for about ten years; I was close; it debuted in 2003

So weekend update managed to survive its first 28 years, presumably, without being able to cherry pick Maher's best' best stuff?

Inconceivable!
