I can feel the freakin' cold there in Warshinton' DC just by looking at the television...and seriously...not making a partisan statement, but it kinda reminds me of news clips I've seen of Moscow...

Just a koinkidink.

Sure.

Any president, from whichever party, whom ain't accused of being a dictator, by some fuck, or some other fuck...

ain't really doin' what he (or she) was elected to do.

republican response....yawwwwnnnnnn

All I hear is "we have plans" and "the president's policies aren't working". Where are these magical plans? It's also nice when you hear "The government shouldn't tell you what to do or what insurance to buy" but when you look at their own policies, it's more of the same bullshit, but for Republican gain.

Fuck these politicians. I hate both sides.

Snail mail. Hand-written manuscript. Read by some WH intern at 0300. Have not watched a SOTU speech in many years. They are more disengenious than campaign speeches.

I agree. was looking for something to have in the background while playing scrabble with the wife. it seemed like even goddamn ESPN was showing the State of the Union.

we settled on antiques roadshow.

I didn't know this... turns out one cabinet member always stays home during the SOTU address to ensure that he can assume power in the event a catastrophe hits during SOTU, wiping out nearly the entire executive body, legislative body and most - if not all - of the Sup Ct.

This year it was the energy secretary, who happens to be a nuclear physicist. link.

I wonder if he's a good nuclear physicist or an oil company shill? (actually given that he's in government, I don't wonder that.)

Time for SOTU now more than ever to be a symmetrical online address. The notion of assembling all those people in one spot is ill-advised, if only because of the "spontaneous" tears, standing ovations, applause and mention of "common folk" who happen to just by chance been invited to sit in the rafters. And it should be limited to 1,000 words. Because the outstanding ones are mere fluff and nonsense.

I don't know about this guy, but the guy who preceded him was legit. I'd really like to peek into that alternate universe 10 years down the road after catastrophe wiped out the government and it was rebuilt by a scientist.

Hmmm... that would be interesting, as long as he's a scientist in the strictest sense of the word, and not a "scientist" in the "here's a guy with a PhD we found to deny climate change" sense of the word.

Wikipedia doesn't say much about his time as a prof, but he's been in management & politics since at least '91. Head of the MIT physics department probably doesn't get to do much science, and it's been political and DOE stuff ever since.

His predecessor had a Nobel though and was still giving technical lectures in 2002 because his work was...is still heavily researched in labs.
