In 1997, Kordell Stewart took the Steelers to the AFC Championship game, and that year he became the only QB in NFL history (Cam Newton became the 2nd in 2011) to pass for 20 and run for 10 TDs. They Cowher brought in offensive coordinators who scolded him for running when they saw on film that some receiver was open somewhere and he should have gone through his progressions. Then from '98-'00 he sucked. Finally in 2001 an OC comes in who uses Kordell's legs, encourages him to run when it's there, and he's top 5 in the league in MVP voting.
Sarcastically,
Remember how great McNabb became when they made him exclusively a pocket QB?!
Dennis Dixon's career really took off when he was told to stop running and stay in the pocket!
How great did RG3 become when he stopped using his mobility and became a statue in the pocket?! (And Gardner hasn't even suffered the injury Dixon & RG3 have!)
Devin Gardner is not a pro-style QB. He needs to be in a spread where there are fewer progressions in the passing game and more running being done. Give Borges credit, at least he kept enough spread elements in the game for DG to be successful. Quite frankly, if you as an OC have to decide between your QB being successful or your RBs, you take the QB every time.
And I'm pretty confident in saying that if Shane Morris had shown any type of competence against Minnesota (and hadn't been tagged like he was) Gardner'd still be on the bench. Hoke is being disingenuous in the claim he just wanted DG to watch the game for awhile. Gardner sucks in the offense they have right now. Problem is, so does Morris, which is scarier.
