Michael Fulmer BBWAA 2016 AL Rookie of the Year. Fulmer received 26 of 30 first-place votes.

Fulmer becomes the fifth rookie of the year winner in franchise history, joining Harvey Kuenn in 1953, Mark Fidrych in 1976, Lou Whitaker in 1978 and Verlander in 2006.

Michael Fulmer: 1 of 2 pitchers to post 4 straight scoreless starts with 6+ IP & 3 or fewer hits (Jake Arrieta).
Fulmer made history, seemingly at every turn.
His 33 1/3 scoreless innings pitched set a new record for a Tigers rookie pitcher, and was the longest scoreless streak for any Detroit pitcher since 1961.
He also became the first Tigers pitcher to go eight straight starts and give up one-or-less runs since at least 1913.

Verlander?s latter day revival continues. Despite allowing a career-high 1.6 homers per nine, he?s contending for that elusive second Cy Young award for the fourth straight season. He currently leads the AL in ERA (2.82), and is third in both strikeouts (217, leaving him 77 short of 3,000 for his career) and WAR (5.1). By that measure, this is his sixth-best season, surpassing 2017 (4.5) and 2010 (4.4) and boosting his peak score to 46.7, 3.2 wins below the average of all Hall pitchers. His 57.4 JAWS ? 4.5 higher than when I checked in roughly 51 weeks ago, on the occasion of his 200th win ? now ranks 46th among all pitchers and is virtually tied with 2019 inductee Roy Halladay (64.3/50.6/57.4) in the rankings. While still 4.1 points shy of the standard for starters, I believe that the tipping point has been reached; he?s already more likely to wind up in Cooperstown than not, and appears primed to push into no-doubt territory over the next couple of years.

Verlander will pitch against the Tigers for the second time this season this series. He will take into that game an Astros record of six straight starts with double-digit strikeouts against a team that struck out 49 times in a three-game series in Tampa.

And by the way, in those last six starts, he?s allowed 9 runs in 37 innings and opponents are hitting .203 with a .240 on-base average against him.

He?s what age 36 looks like on Justin Verlander:

He leads the American League in innings pitched (169 2/3), strikeouts (228), WHIP (0.837), strikeouts-to-walks ratio (6.7) and hits per nine innings (5.7). He?s second in wins (15) and ERA (2.81) and third in WAR (5.4).

His 34.9% strikeout rate is in the top-four percentile in the major leagues. His slider is being swung and missed at 40 percent of the time and opponents are hitting .124 when they manage to put it in play. And they aren?t hitting any better off his other pitches, either ? .228 off his fastball, .148 off his change-up and .205 off his curve ball.

Congratulations to Verlander getting 3,000 career strikeouts and 300 strikeouts on what should be his second Cy Young Award. He has finished second three times and should have won at least twice in those years voting.

Picking a 2010s all-decade team is fun, and everyone has been doing that. You know what's even more fun? Picking an all-decade team for every decade since 1900!

What goes into an all-decade team? It's some amorphous mix of decade-long value, peak-level dominance and iconic status. Some might factor in postseason performance or World Series titles, and some might consider that irrelevant, focusing only on regular-season numbers.

Here were my rules: I picked nine position players -- one for each position, including at least one outfielder who must be a center fielder, plus a utility/DH role that can be any position. I picked five starting pitchers, plus a relief ace for each decade since the 1940s. All WAR totals listed are from Baseball-Reference.com, and only numbers compiled from within the given decade were considered -- some all-time greats might not fit neatly in a specific decade; a few were great enough for long enough to make more than one all-decade team.

One general note: WAR doesn't make any timeline adjustment, something to keep in mind as you compare players across eras. As the quality of play improves over time, it becomes more difficult to post big numbers. In other words, my take is that an 8.0-WAR season is more impressive in 2019 than it was in 1929.

So let's get to it, starting with an in-depth look at the 2010s and then comparing our just-ended decade to the previous 10.
