Ricky Romero is 0-9 with a 7.62 ERA in his last 10 starts, with opponents hitting .307 off him in that stretch. Left-handed hitters are actually batting for a higher average (.293) against him this year than righties (.245). If there’s a lefty the Tigers should be able to rough up, he’s the guy. The Tigers will use their righty-loaded lineup against him and bat Andy Dirks eighth.

Romero has struggled with his control all year, walking 4.75 per nine innings to rank among the worst in baseball, and is 0-9 with a 7.45 ERA in his last 10 starts.

If there is ever a game where the Tigers need to bury the opposing starter early on, it's tonight. Romero is allowing an .870 OPS to hitters the first time through the lineup. This number decreases to .770 and .710, respectively, the second and third times through the batting order. He still has the stuff to shut down an opposing lineup -- as he did with the Oakland A's earlier this month -- but can't be given the opportunity to do so.

Adam Lind 1B - Aug 21: 15-Day DL
Brett Lawrie 3B - Aug 21: 15-Day DL
Jose Bautista RF - Aug 20: 15-Day DL
David Cooper 1B - Aug 20: Day-To-Day
Brandon Morrow SP - Aug 19: 60-Day DL
Colby Rasmus CF - Aug 17: Day-To-Day

For the fifth time in the last six games, Brennan Boesch isn't starting for the Detroit Tigers.
Utilityman Jeff Baker was expected to see an increased workload with a slew southpaws expected to start, and as a result, Boesch has mostly found himself on the bench.
He'll sit for the second straight game tonight with left-hander Ricky Romero slated to pitch for the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of a three-game series at Comerica Park.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland has stacked tonight's lineup heavy with right-handed hitters, despite lefties (.293) hitting Romero for a significant better average than right-handed hitters (.245).
Baker will make his third straight start in right field and Andy Dirks will be one of two left-handed hitters in tonight's lineup. He'll start in left and bat eighth behind Baker.
Gerald Laird will catch for the second consecutive game and Jhonny Peralta will bat fifth with Delmon Young hitting sixth as the designated hitter.
Max Scherzer will start for the Tigers and is coming off a stellar start last Wednesday when he struck out 10 in seven scoreless innings. He's 6-1 with a 3.36 ERA in his last nine starts and 2-0 with a 1.67 ERA in four career starts against the Blue Jays.
Romero has a 5.53 ERA, but -- more specifically -- has dropped his last nine straight decisions and owns a 7.45 ERA and a 35:33 strike-tout-walk ratio in his last 10 starts.

Fister has a groin "situation." Felt in 3rd pitch warming up Sunday.

Leyland said Fister has a groin issue, no word on if it will affect next start.

Fister felt a twinge in his groin warming up before his last start. Not sure if he will make his next start.

Kind of knew something was wrong with Fister Sunday, based on facial expressions, answers.

Fister: "It's another negative, but gotta stay positive."

Fister said he had an MRI, will test it with normal between-start throwing. No one knows if he'll be ready for next start for Tigers.

Leyland on Fister line of Q: "We're wasting time on this ... Rest assured we'll have a starter in his spot."

Me: Way to go grumpy, bet he yells at kids to get off his lawn. 'Rest assured' he will be spitting food in the post game report.

Fister: "No, it doesn’t effect pitching off the rubber at all. That was the thing, why I was able to continue to pitch."
Fister: "Didn’t get any worse throughout the game, it was just a matter of tight and sore, but nothing that was alarming at the time."

Felt it in his 3rd warm up pitch apparently. I really hope this doesnt cause him to go on the DL. We cannot afford to lose him again.

In other words, he's probably going to pitch 8 shutout innings.

Pre-Game comments bitches and moans.

So Left handed hitters have a much higher ave against this bum and Jim goes with the right handed lineup? Last time I checked BB hit lefties just fine but we got the Baker mystery move in his spot again. okaydohki then.

Another day off yesterday and lost more ground to the sux, Toronto is not a good lineup right now, there may not be a single bat in their lineup over .300 This Romero clown has been absolutely atrocious for weeks now. The suxs could easily lose the next two to the spanks. It is absolutely imperative that we try not to suck in this series and take all three! No reason why we shouldn’t be able to here. Cept for maybe gopher ball Sanchez tomorrow, better score some runs O!!

Must have been a while since you checked.

2012 Boesch vs. LHP: .234/.282/.306/.598

2012 Baker vs. LHP: .264/.295/.443./738

Sorry, it's a no-brainer here to play Baker.

Is Fister the new Carlos Guillen.......made of glass?

It's always the pitchers with ERAs over 7 the Tigers need to worry about. Is Romero going to do a Cy Young impersonation for us tonight?

I agree with you about the Boesch comment. However, this is not something new with Romero. Lefties have hit him significantly better than Righties for his entire career. So I wouldn't say it's a no-brainer for Baker to start. I also believe if you want to get Laird a start this series, the other 2 games would be better options than this one. To go even further, I'd would have liked to see Leyland play his lineup that he plays against RHP.

Don't swing at the first pitch after he just walked a guy on 4 straight pitches...that's the only time 1st pitch swiging bothers me.

Hopefully we can scratch a run or two across against this 'dominant' starter tonight.

Lack of Patience. Both Omar and Miggy reaching for pitches on the outer half with less than 2 strikes and grounding out weakly. If we don't score here off this garbage that will be a big reason why.

Delmon better not swing until he gets 2 strikes now, Romero wants to walk a run in.

I'm impressed.

Although, he probably had the take sign the whole AB, but a run is a run.
