Don't look now, Detroit Tiger fans, but the team is gradually working its way into 2nd place in the AL Central. Two games away but more wins (and more losses) than Cleveland. The W/L margin? A mere .018 separating the 2 teams.

Another factor in the Tigers' increasing advantage is the Indians' loss of Terry Francona for the rest of the year. Sadly due to health problems.

While April was a very bad month, the Tigers have been playing above .500 ball for 3 months now. Who saw any of this coming?

On MLB Radio today, the Houston Astros' GM admitted that Justin Verlander was advised by his doctor not to pitch at all this year after undergoing TJ surgery last season. It was speculated that JV might have been able to pitch out of the bullpen later this year.

As much as Tigers fans would like to see it, JV is not returning to Detroit for multiple reasons. He'll be 39 next year and not having pitched in almost 2 years. The Tigers are into building now and aging veterans coming back from surgery, untested, don't fit into that strategy.

He's also not going to want to sign a 1-year contract for peanuts. His last salary was $33 mill/year. And remember, it was the Tigers who pushed him out the door in a clear salary dump.

Totally Tigers

Chris Fetter has been getting a lot of well-deserved credit for the Tigers pitching this year. But how about Juan Nieves? If you?re in that bullpen right now?

Tarik Skubal does his best work against the best teams. Here are his splits this year by opponent quality:

Per Elias Sports, Reyes is the first Major League player to triple from both sides of the plate in a game since Detroit's Dmitri Young at Baltimore on May 6, 2003.
Victor Reyes is the first Tiger to have multiple triples in a game since Ian Kinsler on July 17, 2017 at Kansas City.
Reyes is the second Major Leaguer to do so this season, joining Luis Arraez on June 5 vs. Cleveland.

Detroit's bullpen has now thrown 23.0 consecutive scoreless innings, the team's longest streak since a 25.0-inning stretch from August 26-31, 2007.

Jonathan Schoop leads the AL with 37 multi-hit games.

THE BIG STORY.
Totally Tigers

What was the biggest story of the week? (Last Thursday through Wednesday, that is.)

Was it something singular, a pattern seen or an overall theme? Or was it a story that will carry over throughout the year?

Our two bloggers will each give their takes from what stood out for them over the past week.

As always, we want to hear what you?re thinking. So, give us your big story in no more than 4 sentences.
