It’s a righty-heavy lineup for Royals left-hander Bruce Chen, except that Alex Avila stays behind the plate, presumably because he seems to work better with Anibal Sanchez. Ramon Santiago, 3-for-6 with two doubles off Chen, gets the start at shortstop and rests Jhonny Peralta, 3-for-20 off Chen. Andy Dirks, 2-for-5 off Chen, not only starts but bats second.

Detroit Tigers first-base coach Tom Brookens will miss the games tonight and Thursday at Kansas City for personal reasons, the team announced today.
He will return to the club Friday in Detroit.
Infield coach Rafael Belliard will coach first base during Brookens’ absence.
Offense wasn't the problem for the Detroit Tigers last night. It was pitching.
Justin Verlander was shelled in a 9-8 loss that saw him give up eight runs on 12 hits in arguably the worst outing of his career.
So, if Kansas City can light up Verlander, what can the Tigers expect out of Anibal Sanchez, who has allowed at least five runs in three of five outings since coming to Detroit?
Sanchez takes the mound tonight as the Tigers continue their three-game series in Kansas City and Sanchez tries for his first road win with his new team.
Sanchez will make this start on six days' rest for the Tigers, who still trail the Chicago White Sox by two games in the AL Central after both clubs suffered losses Tuesday night.
Andy Dirks gets the starting nod over Brennan Boesch and Quintin Berry in left field, batting second, and Jeff Baker will start in right field with left-hander Bruce Chen slated to start for the Royals.
The last time the Tigers saw Chen, they bullied him for for six runs in 3 1/3 innings last month. He's 4-5 with a 6.10 ERA in 15 starts and 13 appearances against the Tigers.
Ramon Santiago will spell Omar Infante at second base and Delmon Young will bat fifth for the fourth straight game.
