The Detroit Tigers have a chance to gain some ground in the division after the White Sox fell to the Baltimore Orioles for the third time in four games Thursday afternoon.
So, can the Tigers, who trail Chicago by three games in the AL Central, take advantage of the opportunity?
That'll likely depend on Rick Porcello, who hasn't received a single run of support in his last two starts en route to losing three straight outings.
Porcello will take the mound opposite right-hander Jeremy Guthrie as the Kansas City Royals seek their first three-game series sweep over the Tigers since September 2009.
Detroit had won seven of eight against Kansas City this year, but the club is now in danger of getting swept and falling three games behind Baltimore for the second wild-card spot.
With a righty on the mound, manager Jim Leyland has penciled Brennan Boesch as the No. 6 hitter in right field and kept Andy Dirks in left field, batting second.
After a scheduled day off, Omar Infante returns to second base. He'll hit eighth behind Gerald Laird, who will spell Alex Avila at catcher.
Laird is hitting .407 against right-handers this season and is 4-for-9 in his career against Guthrie. Avila was hitless in two at-bats last night with a walk and a strikeout.

The Tigers came into this midweek series in Kansas City having won seven of eight against the Royals but, as they've done the past several years late in the season, the Royals are suddenly giving Detroit fits.
Rick Porcello (9-9, 4.60 ERA) takes the mound tonight, hoping to salvage at least one win at Kauffman Stadium. He's put together two consecutive quality starts against the Orioles and Angels, but both were losses.
In his last start vs. Kansas City, Porcello gave up three runs on seven hits in eight innings, earning the 9-3 victory. Lifetime, Billy Butler is 10-for-35 vs. Porcello, while Eric Hosmer is 4-for-11 with two home runs.
Right-hander Jeremy Guthrie (2-3, 4.32) starts for the Royals. Miguel Cabrera is 5-for-15 with two home runs off Guthrie; Jhonny Peralta is 5-for-16. Austin Jackson is 2-for-12 and Delmon Young is 2-for-17.

The would-be stopper is Rick Porcello, who's taken a loss in each of his last three starts — despite solid performances. In his last three starts, Porcello has allowed four, three and two earned runs, but the Tigers couldn't muster much run support either time.
A sweep would come at a horrible time for the Tigers, who are trying to track down the White Sox in the AL Central standings.
The White Sox lost three of four in Baltimore, but still would have a net gain in the standings if the Royals sweep the Tigers.
The Tigers lost the first two games by scores of 9-8 and 1-0; each time, they had a chance to tie or win it in the ninth inning.
Tonight's game will be the final game before the Tigers return home for a huge three-game series against the White Sox, starting Friday night. Sellout crowds are expected for each game with first place on the line.
The Tigers have won five of the six games they've played against the White Sox at Comerica Park.
