Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gwynn Family & the Padres family, on the passing of BaseballHall of Famer, Tony Gwynn.

Tony blamed Smokeless Tobacco for his cancer...

"Tony Gwynn said he dipped smokeless tobacco inside his right cheek during his entire 20-year career with the San Diego Padres, and for another decade following that".

Back in the day it wasn't a big surprise that smokeless tobacco was a cancer magnet. Too bad..

I met him at a conference in SD two years ago when he was signing autographs and he'd just undergone pretty massive surgery to remove cancer from his throat, etc. His face was quite disfigured from the procedure but he was in good spirits and talking a lot of baseball.

Sad - I always liked Gwynn as a ball player

I fucking hate Cancer... My Grandmother died of it.. My dad had skin and bladder cancer which did not cause him to directly die cause he beat them both weakened him later life toward the end.. And I have only 2 family members who have had it... I am sure others on here have been affected by cancer....

He had truly amazing stats...

He only k'd 434 times in 20 seasons and 10232 plate appearances.. He only had 1 three k game I his whole career.. (I wonder who...I guess I would bet Randy Johnson)
He never K'd in over 100 at bats verses Greg Maddux... We remember him getting bigger later in his career but he had 318 SB's.. Had five 200 hit seasons, and 197 twice... Lifetime .338 average, and a fantastic .388 OBP....

When I played ball I tried to swing just like him. I looked up to Gwynn more than any other player.

434 times. That's like 3 seasons for AJax. The no strikeout vs Maddox is more amazing.
