Bet that their fingers and especially thumbs are physically fit.

Its as simple as pulling out old 1-6 photos or a yearbook and seeing how much weve changed since the 80s and early 90s. Any photos of all ages for that matter. Weve become a bunch of nitrate filled gastropods hell bent on convenience. There were the 1-2 fat kids in a class now its skimming the very definition of "normal" to be heavy at a young age. I ate more than 2 kids when I was that age (and relatively unhealthy foods) but played sports year round and never 1 lb overweight. If you notice a yearbook of kids these days they are 30% obese and half overweight (*). These behaviors are being learned early and are only going to perpetuate themselves. I think technology and general laziness has a hand in it but its more than that.

perfect for remote combat via drones* **

U.S. Police departments have requested body bags be made larger because people are so fat now.

It's unhealthy inputs, laziness, sedentary lifestyle dictated by long commutes to/from work and above all else (IMO) ....portions.

It's ridiculous how much food people will eat in one setting. You don't have to be a gym rat or workout freak to be fit if you simply eat less, walk places and eat well.

Well, yeah...just like grocery bags are screwing up the eco-system, so are these giant body bags needed to accommodate great big giant fat corpses at crime scenes...imagine how much additional space these giant bags require for land fills after those great big giant fat stiffs go into the ground themselves...which, by the way, are also taking up landfill space...

Maybe we need to start recycling body bags; or double up on the stiffs that police stuff into them...maybe we need to charge the families of dead fat people dragged from crime scenes in body bags a dime, just like the guy at buy Mickeys and Jack Daniels from charges me per bag...

Part of the problem is the work force now. Back in the Leave it to Beaver days, June could be home all day preparing a decent, and balanced meal, while Ward was at the office knocking back Manhattans at lunch and earning a comfortable suburban living. But now lots of homes have 2 parents working or single parents so they go the quick and easy route which is convenience foods which are terrible, either as fast food, or the shit you buy frozen from walmart and nuke in the microwave. And then because these greasy, blobs of semi-food are digested so fast, they leave kids feeling hungry an hour later so they grab snacks and junk food.

I think if you were to find a study, you would see the majority of people with obesity problems started when they were children, rather then adults who just let themselves go.

Of course it doesn't help now that most kids would rather facebook or xbox than go outside and play and get exercise.

I'm guessing body bags are not put in landfills but incinerated.

I remember that staying home was for inclement weather, study, homework, reading, paying board/card games, and TV of course. But once I became a teen, I wouldn't be home at all to just watch the tube, when I preferred to be out playing outdoors, swimming in pools, pick-up baseball, football, basketball, and building hockey rinks in our backyards in the winter. (as well as sledding and tobagganing) if possible.

We were just so much more active back then, and I also recall the physically fit craze of the early-mid 80s, including aerobics for the ladies, with their skin-tight leotards, and Flashdance-inspired legwarmers.

If I wanted to go anywhere, it was on foot, by bus, or especially by bicycle, or even hitch-hiking. Nowadays it seems like most kids wouldn't be caught dead...gasp..having to walk or bike anywhere.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go to the kitchen to get another cup of HFCS soda-pop, then brush the cheeto-dust off of my keyboard with my orange-tinted fingers...

I see kids walking and biking around the San Fernando Valley all day; not too many of them look really fat to me.

I couldn't find data on regional prevalence of child obesity; but this map from the CDC indicates that California is among the least obese states in the country.

Not so surprisingly most of the red states have the highest:

I have yet to see even one bicyclist in my area so far this summer.

Illinois appears relatively fit among the "fat belt" girdling the middle of the US. I have a hard time believing WI isn't fatter. everyone seems to carry a few extra pounds up there due to all the beer they drink.

Yeah, all those beers and brats should pack on the pounds, but beer doesn't contain HFCS, AFAIK. Maybe they lied on the surveys b/c tipsy?

I noticed something interesting when looking at the map; so I did a lil' search.

Put your cursor over - don't have to click onto it - the "Air Travel Destinations" toward the upper right on this map and see what comes up.

places with mountains have lower obesity rates.

sort of makes sense, if you assume those people are staying active hiking, climbing, mountain climbing, mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding, getting drunk and fighting other skiers/snowboarders... and all those things are more strenuous when you add the vertical dimension.
