Trump Administration tells EPA to freeze all grants and contracts

Freezing new grants would be one thing, but freezing existing grants would put startups out of business since you sometimes have to take out a loan or put up your own money when you get a grant, then you do the work, then you get the money. A lot of it is universities, don't know how this would affect them. They have to find the money somewhere.

Even if it's only new grants, fuck this noise. It's bad for the world. You usually have to show some initial results to stand a chance at getting a grant anyway. This kind of funding is a huge part of why our universities are as great as they are.

He has halted federal hiring and raises. It appears that this is a piggy back to that. It also states that it is a temporary freeze.

His idea behind the hiring freeze, exceptions only for military, national security or public safety personnel, as it was said is wasteful money on duplicate jobs.

As far as this goes I did read "This may be a little wider than some previous administrations, but it?s very similar to what others have done,? he told the publication." I'd wait and see where it goes before people freak out.

I suspect it's his way of looking over things before starting them up again.

So let me be clear about Scott .. He should not be nominated for EPA.

this is common when a new administration takes over. just more bloviating - leftists taking every thing to 11 right out of the gate. I guess none of them have heard of the boy who cried wolf.

Hiring freezes or freezes of new stuff happens, but I thought they had said this was unprecedented.

Edit: Let's see, anonymous guy says it hasn't happened in 10 years, guy with a name says it's not unprecedented:

One EPA employee aware of the freeze said he had never seen anything like it in nearly a decade with the agency. Hiring freezes happened, he said, but freezes on grants and contracts seemed extraordinary.

Monday night, Myron Ebell, who ran the EPA transition for the incoming administration, confirmed the basics of the freeze, but said the actions were not unprecedented.

The freezing isn't all there is to this. This is very much about controlling the message.

I just returned from a briefing for Communication Directors where the following information was provided. These restrictions are effective immediately and will remain in place until further direction is received from the new Administration?s Beach Team. Please review this material and share with all appropriate individuals in your organization. If anyone on your staff receives a press inquiry of any kind, it must be referred to me so I can coordinate with the appropriate individuals in OPA.

No press releases will be going out to external audiences.
No social media will be going out. A Digital Strategist will be coming on board to oversee social media. Existing, individually controlled, social media accounts may become more centrally controlled.
No blog messages.
The Beach Team will review the list of upcoming webinars and decide which ones will go forward.
Please send me a list of any external speaking engagements that are currently scheduled among any of your staff from today through February.
Incoming media requests will be carefully screened.
No new content can be placed on any website. Only do clean up where essential.
List servers will be reviewed. Only send out critical messages, as messages can be shared broadly and end up in the press.
I will provide updates to this information as soon as I receive it.

I was referring to the hiring freezes but wasn't explicit about that in my post - that was unintentional. I wouldn't be surprised if the grant stuff was fairly routine but I don't know - I did hear or read that the hiring freezes are commonplace. But I think we need a little context for the EPA stuff. hasn't happened in 10 years? this is only the second peaceful transition of power in those 10 years. anonymous guy may be technically correct but he's working with a weak sample size.

I've run into hiring freezes before, but grant freezes has such tremendous potential to be disruptive. These things move slowly because there's so much planning involved. People hire and fire based on grants. By the time one is awarded, you've already sunk significant resources into it. Big organizations can weather delays, but startups just go under.
