AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- A game after posting the 20th triple-double of his career, Kobe Bryant looked flustered. Passes weren't connecting, shots weren't falling and his Lakers were locked in a back-and-forth struggle with the lowly Detroit Pistons.

But vintage Bryant showed up, albeit briefly, in the third quarter to hoist Los Angeles out of its rut for a 106-96 victory Tuesday night.

Bryant scored all 12 of his points in a row. The Pistons held the NBA's leading scorer without a point in the first half, but still lost their ninth in a row.

Offensively, we just continue to be awful. We're really messed up right now as a team. We have a lot of dilemmas, a lot of guys feeling pressure, but we're really not right mentally right now.

- Stan Van Gundy, Pistons coach

"Offensively, we just continue to be awful," Detroit coach Stan Van Gundy said. "We're really messed up right now as a team."

"We have a lot of dilemmas, a lot of guys feeling pressure, but we're really not right mentally right now," he said. "That's got to change before anything else does."

Bryant had been averaging almost 27 points per game. His burst helped the Lakers take an 81-65 lead heading into the final period.

"I was tired," Bryant said. "The first half, I missed a couple of easy ones. The rhythm of the game really wasn't there.

"(In the second half) I made a couple shots and stepped on the gas. It was a critical juncture where we could stretch the game out, and we were able to do that."

Los Angeles had six players score in double figures, including each of its starters. Jordan Hill scored 22 points, and reserve Nick Young had 19.

Josh Smith led Detroit with 18 points, and Andre Drummond added eight points and 13 rebounds. The Pistons have lost by an average of nearly 10 points per game during their skid.

Carlos Boozer hit the first three baskets of the game for the Lakers while Bryant struggled. Bryant missed all five of his shots in the first half, and also had five turnovers and two fouls.

The Lakers led 46-45 at the break, and the Pistons hurt themselves early in the third quarter when Smith and coach Stan Van Gundy were called for technical fouls.

Bryant then took over, scoring the next dozen points for the Lakers and drawing huge cheers from the many Los Angeles fans in attendance. By the time he was done, the Lakers led 70-54.

TIP-INS

Lakers: Improved to 4-0 against Eastern Conference teams this season. ... Bryant finished with fewer than 20 points in a game for just the third time this season. ... The Lakers have won consecutive games (including a 129-122 overtime victory over Toronto on Nov. 30) for the second time this season.

Pistons: Have lost five in a row to the Lakers and 10 of the last 11.

PISTONS MISFIRING

Detroit is on its longest losing streak since a 10-game skid two seasons ago.

"We have to lift in the energy and morale," Caron Butler said. "When adversity strikes on the court, you can't get so hard on yourself and have this `woe me' attitude.

"It's hard to do a lot of things when you're losing. It's hard to sleep. Hard to enjoy the city and do a lot of things."

This team is beyond pathetic.

I'm still not going to judge SVG until he gets HIS core of players here, currently this core of losers belong to Joe Dumars.

You can't magically turn Jennings and Smith into smart, efficient players. You can throw Monroe aka stone hands, can't make a layup etc. into the mix. Gregg Popovich could coach this team and it wouldn't be any different, they are just dumb basketball players with severe limitations and do not know how to play winning basketball.

SVG is a good coach but you can only shine a turd so much. Hopefully the draft treats us well.

In truth, what is happening now is necessary for this team. They need a guy like Mudiay to come in and be a superstar, and try and find any value for Jennings and Smith in the off-season. It scares me a bit that there is such a run on big men, and that's not what the Pistons need right now.

Agreed. Smith and Jennings both shoot us right out of games. It's been a sad run here lately. This team went from sellout streaks to being flat out unwatchable. I hope this team completely tanks this year so we can (hopefully) wind up with the #1 lottery ball and finally start rebuilding. I'm also hoping that Drummond doesn't get ruined in the process. I've got faith in SVG, but things are massively screwed up right now.
