I think a couple of those years it was the plan to not throw 95 early in the game. With that being said, older ad injuries might have taken its tow. I was hoping for a good year from him..oh well.

Webvideo Detroit Tigers' Justin Verlander speaks about triceps strain, first trip to disabled list.
Justin Verlander will start the 2015 season on the disabled list due to a right triceps muscle strain. It will be the first trip to the disabled list in Verlander's career.

A couple of questions.

1. All ball parks had the same calibrated radar guns, right?

2. Radar guns are the same from year to year?

3. Pitchers choose when to "put a little extra on it" when they need that third strike. So each year, the circumstances were the same and required him to load up at the same rate?

4. Verlander threw the exact same amount of pitches each year?

5. More velocity means what long term?

Look at the link. You are saying the KC Royals pitched 2,100 more time over 97 MPH in 2014 than the Tigers? I don't buy it.

It's fine to ask many reasonable questions and there are many factors involved. But the most reasonable explanation for why he barely throws 95 any longer isn't because the radar gun is off my 1 mph or the park he pitches in or the gun. It's more likely because he can't do it anymore.

I never said that he hasn't lost velocity. He has. Anyone who has read my posts in the past know that starters tend to not be Cy Young caliber past the age of 30 and a lot of that has to do with losing velocity.

Posting raw data that can be skewed or misleading without analysis is just plain folly. The following article was published early last year:

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/justin-verlander-needs-to-change-to-counter-change/

The final analysis in that article is that Verlander has to learn to not to use his 95 MPH fastball to get hitters out. He has to become a pitcher, not a thrower. The data in this article is quite telling and can lend some optimism if Verlander does learn how to get hitters out with 2 strikes on them (aside from blowing one by them). He might never win another Cy Young. We don't need him to. We just need him to pitch at an above level.

Percent of Sliders thrown:

2009 = 2.3%
2010 = 6.9%
2011 = 8.4%
2012 = 11.9%
2013 = 13.2%
2014 = 15.1%

Does the fact he is throwing more sliders correlate to the lose of the amount of pitches over 95 MPH?

It could be in correlation with his loss of command, too. You'd think with him losing velocity, it would actually help him locate pitches better. The opposite has occurred, which makes me think he's trying extra hard to make up for his lost velocity. He could throw 92, and still be dominant with the stuff he has if he commands it. Look at Jered Weaver. The guy adjusted quick after losing his cheese. He throws between 85-90 now, but still gets great results, and even has a decent K rate still. Verlander now needs to focus on location instead of speed. He's not like Lincecum, who had no command to begin with.. just great stuff that guys swung at a lot. Verlander used to be able to command mid-90's easy. Now, he's trying to overcompensate.
