Looks like Howard is going to be done for a long while...had to be carted off the ice with a groin injury.

WASHINGTON -- The Detroit Red Wings have put goalie Jimmy Howard on injured reserve after he was carted off the ice Saturday night at Washington.

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said Howard had an MRI that revealed a groin injury. Howard is set to get an ultrasound on Monday to make sure there is nothing else, Holland said.

"Right now, he's got a bit of a slight tear," Holland said. "That's great news if that's all it is."

The Red Wings called up goalie Tom McCollum on Sunday from Grand Rapids of the AHL.

The 25-year-old McCollum has appeared in 21 games for Grand Rapids this season, going 10-8-3 with a 2.33 goals-against average and a 0.911 save percentage. He has won his last five starts.

Howard was hurt attempting to make a save on Troy Brouwer's goal in the first period. After Washington dumped the puck in, Howard stopped it behind the net and started back around front, but Brouwer got to the puck first. Howard -- coming from the left -- stretched trying to make the save.
