I was reading this article on OSU on espn.com, about how they basically dumped money on buying kids to try to win it all in 2024.
They’re going the route Texas A&M tried with Jimbo Fisher. OSU hired the AD that gave Fisher his big extension (Ross Bjork) - and then paid him a record breaking buyout to go away! - all because Fisher had a good 2020 year, when college football was a mess b/c of COVID. That’s like MSU-Mel Tucker contract level incompetence right there. Bjork’s Wikipedia page shows he’s been the head of several scandal-plagued institutions during his tenure, with the Houston Nutt/Hugh Freeze scandal occurring on his watch, and only coming out because of Houston Nutt suing Ole Miss for defamation after they tried to blame him for all Hugh Freeze's misdeeds.
This is insane to me to hire a guy with THAT track record when you’re trying to win. Not only does he have a lousy ethical track record, but he hasn't ever produced good results.
Also, on the Chip Kelly hire, it says he took a $4MM pay cut to ditch his UCLA job and go to OSU, but… who does that? And the article goes on and on about Kelly’s ties to Day, going back to their roots in New Hampshire, but also mentions Day’s first choice for OC was former Penn St HC and failed Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien, so he didn’t even plan to hire Kelly.
The ESPN.com article quotes one of the boosters who put the financial packages together with this ringing endorsement of Ryan Day:
Nothing like the pressure of losing your job to motivate the team… hope his players like him.
All these moves seem inspired by things I’ve seen the dumbest fans suggest programs do… basically throw money at the problem to hire big names and hope everything works out. Nothing about working harder, building team chemistry & morale, developing players, etc.
OSU has an unbelievable soft schedule this season (after all their fans ragged on ours last year), so on paper at least, everything lines up for them to make a run. They have only 3 road games (@MSU, PSU and Oregon), and one against Northwestern being played at Wrigley Field. But I could see this team imploding with too much talent and too big egos like A&M did.
Also, this is weird: the players are also going to the fundy Christian route and doing mass adult baptism in Columbus (see link: "Ohio State Football Stars Preach the Gospel to Thousands of Students, Leading to Many Baptisms: 'The Most Incredible Night'") and link to a less insanely religious coverage of the event.

"We've got the best. Every position group is stacked, with depth. So we have no choice but to win the national championship," Powell said. "A lot of people love Coach Day. I think he's a really good coach. [He has] all the resources that he possibly needs to win it all. And if he doesn't, then the writing's on the wall. ... Nobody's really hearing any excuse.
