I was listening to some right-wing radio show while i ate my high salt, mass-produced fast food (had to go to the bank next door at lunch), and I noticed that the host repeatedly referred to the democratic party as "the democrat party."

why is this? I'm guessing it's just a petty insult, but I was thinking there may be more nuance to it (though I doubt that).

I asked this republican guy in my office, but as soon as he realized my question was about politics, he started angrily ranting about unions and Obama without answering. He wasn't making any sense, so I figured I'd repeat the question here.

Who was the host?

you know, I couldn't figure that out. I think it was Limbaugh, but it didn't sound exactly like him, granted I've never heard him on radio before. he didn't identify himself before the one commercial break I heard.

the last bit I listened to, some half-wit who claimed to be a teamster, but also a Republican for 29 years was babbling incoherently about some bill in CA that was defeated (Prop 32, or maybe 22, they said both, then mentioned they got the number wrong, but didn't say which one), and how he was going to leave the state now, and Texas sounded like a pretty good place on account of their secession petition. the host then started asking him how he managed to survive being a republican in a union, and that he believes there are a lot of republican union members out there being taken advantage of by these unions that exist only to funnel money to the "democrat party."

at that point, I flipped back to Rage Against the Machine's "Evil Empire." I lost it years ago, and just re-ordered a new copy last week. man, that album rocks.

Colorado voted down such a Bill in 2008 despite the money poured in by Coors and other large, laborforce-based companies to support its passage. I think it was clear the intent of the Bill was to make it so that companies like Coors could reduce wages, reduce benefits, hire underskilled workers and generally fuck over the working class.

Of course CO doesn't have the Labor history Michigan does ...

Tom Morello for Pres 2016.

It started a couple decades ago, Republicans thought Democratic sounded too much like Democracy so they starting calling them the Democrat Party, because they had done research that indicated people thought that didn't sound as good.

Oh.

Anyways, I don't know why anyone would call it the "Democrat Party."

So I can't answer your question.

What? They were never referred to Democratic. In 47 years I've always heard the word democrat..Its not knew. I must be missing something or you guys are..

Maybe Democrats singlarly but democrats party is weird? I don't know but its always Democrats.

When I voice texted the "democrat party" it was auto corrected it to the "Democratic Party." I had to manually change it.

All I learned from this thread is that Rage Against the Machine is still relevant and it's time to break out some old CDs.

My wife and I attended a RATM concert in the late 90s, and a couple of younger concert-goers sitting near us asked us why we were there b/c we were kinda "old" I asked them if they had attended any Ozzfests lately, and they shut up.
