The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team (14-6) visits Chapel Hill, N.C., and the campus of the University of North Carolina for the second time this season and the second straight year for the NCAA Tournament. The Wolverines face No. 9 New Hampshire this Saturday (Nov. 12) at 2 p.m. If Michigan defeats the Wildcats, the Maize and Blue will face either No. 1-ranked and top-seeded North Carolina or No. 20-ranked Ohio on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 13) at 2 p.m.
The Wolverines advanced to the Big Ten Tournament final after defeating Iowa, 4-1, last Friday (Nov. 4). Sophomore Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) had a goal and an assist in the win over the Hawkeyes. Michigan then fell to Penn State in the championship game, 3-2, as the Nittany Lions broke a 2-2 tie with nine minutes remaining in the game.

New Hampshire -- Michigan holds a 4-2 series advantage over New Hampshire heading into Saturday's game. The last meeting between the two schools happened last Sept. 24 in Ann Arbor. Rachael Mack and Vanessa Sekhon scored goals as U-M defeated the Wildcats, 2-1. Michigan and New Hampshire have not played each other in the NCAA Tournament.
North Carolina -- The Tar Heels hold a 15-3 all-time series advantage on the Wolverines heading into the weekend. The two schools have already played each other twice this season. In the 2011 season opener, UNC defeated U-M, 5-0, on Aug. 27. Michigan then traveled to Chapel Hill and fell, 4-3, in double overtime. Fifth-year senior Christi Barwick had 11 saves and senior Bryn Bain had a goal and an assist in the overtime loss. Michigan has won both games against North Carolina in NCAA Tournament play. Michigan defeated UNC, 5-2, on Nov. 10, 2001, in Ann Arbor and won, 2-1, on Nov. 15, 2003, in East Lansing, Mich.
Ohio -- Michigan has won all eight meetings against Ohio in the all-time season series. This includes a 1-0 overtime win in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament in Ann Arbor. Current U-M assistant coach Lucia Belassi White scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute of play to advance to the quarterfinal round.

Michigan's NCAA Tournament History -- The Wolverines will make their 10th appearance in the NCAA Tournament this weekend (Sat-Sun., Nov. 12-13). The Maize and Blue will participate in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year, having lost to Old Dominion, 1-0, in Chapel Hill last season. Michigan picked up the first national championship in the history of U-M women's athletics in 2001, defeating North Carolina, Michigan State, Princeton and Maryland on its way to the title. The Maize and Blue advanced to the championship match in 1999, defeating Duke, Wake Forest and Connecticut before falling to Maryland, 2-1. In 2003, the Wolverines defeated North Carolina and Michigan State to advance to the national semifinals before falling to Wake Forest, 1-0.

Sister Act -- Senior Hannah Dawson (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) will see familiar faces in the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament. Dawson has two sisters (Meghan and Melanie) that play for North Carolina. Meghan is a senior on the Tar Heels, while Melanie is a redshirt freshman on the squad.
Pankratz Earns Big Ten Coach of the Year -- Head coach Marcia Pankratz was named the Big Ten Field Hockey Coach of the Year this past Thursday (Nov. 3) at the Big Ten Tournament. Pankratz earned Big Ten Coach of the Year for the fifth time after guiding the Wolverines to an outright Big Ten regular-season title and a 5-1 conference record this year. She also has earned the award in 1997, 2000, 2002 and 2010. Pankratz has won 183 games in her U-M career, which includes a national championship in 2001, a national championship game appearance in 1999, and a national semifinal appearance in 2003.
Three Wolverines Make All-Big Ten Teams -- Senior Bryn Bain, sophomore Rachael Mack and freshman Aline Fobe were named to the All-Big Ten first team, it was announced on Thursday morning (Nov. 3). Fifth-year senior Eileen Brandes took home the team's Sportsmanship Award for the second straight season. Mack was named to the All-Big Ten second team last season, while Bain and Fobe earned their first All-Big Ten honor.
Albini, Fobe Make All-Big Ten Tournament Team -- Sophomore Mallory Albini and freshman Aline Fobe were named to the Big Ten's All-Tournament team following the championship game. Albini scored the game-winning goal in Michigan's 4-1 win over Iowa on Friday (Nov. 4), while Fobe had an assist in the Iowa win and a defensive save in the Penn State game on Sunday (Nov. 6).
Wolverines Clinch Big Ten Regular-Season Title -- Michigan won its eighth Big Ten regular-season title as the Wolverines defeated Indiana, 4-2, last Friday afternoon (Oct. 28). This also was the fourth outright Big Ten title won by the Wolverines. Michigan won the outright title in 2000, 2002 and 2007. Head coach Marcia Pankratz earned her seventh Big Ten regular-season title in the win over the Hoosiers.
Michigan also earned back-to-back regular-season titles for the first time since the Wolverines did the trick in 2003 and 2004. U-M won three straight titles from 2002-04. Michigan had four different goal scorers in the Indiana win. [ Indiana Recap ]
Michigan Ranked Eighth in Latest NFHCA Poll -- The Maize and Blue is ranked eighth in the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, released Nov. 8. The Wolverines received 360 points and are one of four Big Ten schools (Penn State, Iowa and Ohio State) to be ranked in the top 20. North Carolina is the number one team followed by Old Dominion, Syracuse, Maryland and Connecticut.
Big Ten Stats -- Junior/sophomore Haley Jones leads the Big Ten in goals-against-average (1.38), while fifth-year senior Christi Barwick is fourth in the league (1.53) ... Jones is tied for second in the Big Ten with three shutouts ... Sophomore Rachael Mack is fourth in goals (14) and is fifth in points (31) ... Senior Bryn Bain is sixth in assists (9), while sophomore Ainsley McCallister is tied for seventh with eight assists ... Freshman Emy Guttman is tied for sixth in goals (11) ... As a team, Michigan is second in the conference in goals-against-average (1.46) and is tied for the lead in shutouts (6). The Maize and Blue also is third in scoring margin (+1.41).
